Understanding Autonomous Vehicles: Pros & Cons

Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) are capable of operating without human intervention, utilizing various sensors and technologies for navigation and safety. They offer advantages such as increased safety and reduced traffic congestion, but also present challenges like potential malfunctions, job loss, and privacy concerns. The technology relies on a combination of radar, LIDAR, and cameras to analyze data and control vehicle functions.

What are Autonomous Vehicles (AVs)?
◦ Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) are vehicles that have the ability to control their own operation, and perform
the necessary functions with little to no human intervention.
◦ They rely entirely on their own senses for exercising vehicle control functions, and maintaining situational
awareness.
◦ A human passenger is not required to take control of the vehicle at any time, nor is a human passenger
required to be present in the vehicle at all. An autonomous car can go anywhere a traditional car goes
and do everything that an experienced human driver does.
How Autonomous Vehicles Work
They use long range radar sensors for: They use LIDAR(Light detection and
radar sensors)for:
• Adaptive cruise control
• Pedestrian detection • Environmental mapping
• Blind spot detection
• Collision avoidance
• Road lane detection
• Emergency braking
They use cameras for: They use short/medium range radars
for:
• Viewing surrounding
• Cross Traffic alert
• Assist in parking
• Blind spot detection
• Traffic sign recognition
• Rear collision warning
• Lane departure warning

☼ A microprocessor then analyses all the data from the sensors, and uses the data
to manipulate the vehicles’ steering wheel, acceleration and breaking. 5/9/2024
