Basic Basic pathogenesis includes:
Pathogene • Superiority or inferiority of the Zheng qi 正气 or Xie qi 邪气
sis • Disharmony of yin and yang
• Disorder of qi, blood and body fluid
• Disorder of viscera
• Disorder of meridians and collateral
Superiority • Superiority of pathogenic qi leading to an excess 邪气盛则实
or The Zheng qi is still sufficient at the time, although Xie qi
inferiority has invaded the body. Usually in the early or middle stages
of the of diseases due to invasion of the exogenous pathogens,
Zheng qi or retention of phlegm fluid or stagnant blood. Some
Xie qi 邪正盛衰 examples for your reference such as:
Wind-cold invading lung, retention of phlegm damp
(phlegm heat) in the lung, dryness invading lung
Phlegm misting (harassing) the heart, hyperactivity of the
heart fire (heart fire flaming upward) , stagnation of the
heart blood
Damp-heat accumulating in spleen, damp-cold invading
spleen, Damp-heat in the liver and gallbladder, retention of
cold in the liver meridian, flare-up of the liver fire (Liver fire
flaming upward)
Cold invading stomach, damp-cold invading stomach,
damp-heat accumulating in stomach, retention of food in
the stomach,
Damp-heat in the large intestine, retention of food in the
intestines Damp heat in the bladder
• Inferiority of essential qi (Zheng qi) leading to a
deficiency 精气夺则虚
Deficiency of Zheng qi is more focused here. It happens
with prolonged weakness of body constitution, poor
function of zang-fu organs, deficiency of qi, blood and body
fluid. Usually in the late stage of disease or after attack of
serious disease.
Some examples for your reference such as:
Deficiency of the heart qi, blood, yin and yang
Deficiency of the lung qi, yin, yang
Deficiency of the spleen qi, yin, yang
Insufficiency (deficiency) of the stomach qi, yin, yang
Insufficiency (deficiency) of the liver qi, blood, yang, yin
Deficiency of the kidney qi, essence, yin, yang
• Superiority of Zheng qi with decline of Xie qi 正胜邪退
Leading to a favorable turn towards recovery, a
n example such as: Cold-wind invading lung to cause
common cold, and if superiority of anti-pathogenic qi is
strong enough to expel the cold-wind, then restoration of
normal function of lung
• Superiority of Xie qi with deficiency of Zheng qi 邪胜正衰
Disease gets aggravated or may cause poor result.
• Standstill of the equally unrelenting Xie qi and Zheng qi 邪
正相持 Leading chronic process of disease as neither one is
able to defeat the other thoroughly. Example like damp or
phlegm fluid causes chronic diseases.
