Science SA-1 Model Question Paper – Answers

(Class 9, Detailed)
PART A: PHYSICS (28 Marks)
1. Displacement after a complete round = 0 m, because the initial and final positions are same.
2. Momentum = mass × velocity (mv).
3. Force is the product of mass and acceleration (F=ma).
4. Large stone/bus resists motion due to inertia of rest (greater mass, greater inertia).
5. Acceleration is negative when velocity decreases with time (retardation).
6. Balanced Forces: Equal and opposite, net force = 0, no change in motion.
Unbalanced Forces: Net force ≠ 0, body accelerates or changes motion.
7. Distance travelled = ut + ½at² = 96 m (u=0, a=3, t=8).
8. Odometer measures total distance. Path in uniform motion is straight line.
9. Newton’s Laws:
(i) 1st Law (Inertia): body stays in rest/uniform motion unless external force acts.
(ii) 2nd Law: F = ma, force = rate of change of momentum.
(iii) 3rd Law: Every action has equal and opposite reaction.
10. Stone has more inertia than rubber ball because mass is greater.
11. Uniform circular motion: Motion in circle at constant speed; velocity continuously changes
direction. Example: planet around sun, fan blade.
12. Car problem: With given values, a=0 (possible misprint). Normally use equations of motion to
calculate acceleration and stopping distance.
13. Distance–time graph: uniform motion = straight line. Uniform acceleration = curve. Acceleration
type indicated by slope.

PART B: CHEMISTRY (25 Marks)

14. Water at 110°C exists as steam (gaseous state).
15. Direct solid→gas change is called Sublimation.
16. Identify compound:
Oxygen – Element.
Carbon – Element.
Iron – Element.
Sugar – Compound (C■■H■■O■■).
17. Tyndall effect: scattering of light by colloids (e.g. light through dust, fog).
18. Perfume spreads due to diffusion of volatile molecules through air.
19. Solution = homogeneous mixture of solute and solvent. Example: sugar in water.
20. Ice at 273 K cools better than water at 273 K because it absorbs latent heat during melting.
21. Pure water confirmed by sharp boiling point (100°C) and freezing point (0°C).
22. Tincture of iodine: solute – iodine, solvent – alcohol. Soda water: solute – CO■, solvent – water.
23. Solids – fixed shape/volume; Liquids – fixed volume, no fixed shape; Gases – no fixed
shape/volume, compressible.
24. Diagram (explanation): Ice → water at 0°C, temperature constant during melting. Thermometer
shows latent heat absorption.
25. Classification:
Sodium – Element.
Soil – Mixture (heterogeneous).
Sugar solution – Mixture (solution).
Silver – Element.
Calcium carbonate – Compound.
Tin – Element.
26. Homogeneous/Heterogeneous:
Soda water – Homogeneous.
Wood – Heterogeneous.
Soil – Heterogeneous.
Filtered water – Homogeneous.

PART C: BIOLOGY (27 Marks)

27. Passage of water through semipermeable membrane from high to low concentration is
Osmosis.
28. Tendon connects muscle to bone, made of fibrous connective tissue.
29. Lysosomes are suicide bags as they contain enzymes that can digest cell if they burst.
30. Root epidermis (with root hairs) absorbs water and minerals, increases surface area.
31. Tissue = group of similar cells performing common function.
32. Mitochondria – powerhouse of cell, produce ATP.
33. Neuron: shows cell body with nucleus, dendrites, axon, axon terminals.
34. Muscle tissue differences:
- Skeletal: striated, voluntary, multinucleated.
- Smooth: non-striated, involuntary, spindle-shaped.
- Cardiac: striated, involuntary, branched, intercalated discs.
35. Mitosis vs Meiosis:
- Mitosis: 2 diploid cells, body growth, single division.
- Meiosis: 4 haploid cells, gamete formation, two divisions.
36. Functions:
- Golgi: modify, pack, transport proteins/lipids.
- ER: RER – proteins, SER – lipids/detoxification.
- Vacuoles: store food/water/waste; plant vacuole maintains turgidity.
37. Animal cell: cell membrane, nucleus, mitochondria, ER, Golgi, lysosomes, vacuoles.
38. Simple vs Complex tissues:
- Simple: one cell type, e.g. parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma.
- Complex: many cell types, e.g. xylem, phloem (transport).
