UNIVERSITY OF ZIMBABWE

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
Maths 1 —Functions TUTORIAL

Mrs C.J. Gundani-Mandave

1. Let A = {0, {1, 2}, 3}. Make a list of all elements of A and a (separate) list of all the subsets
of A.
2. Let U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, . . . , 12}, A = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11}, B = {2, 3, 6, 12}, C = {2, 3, 6, 12},
D = {2, 4, 8}. Determine the sets (a)A ∪ B (b) A ∩ C (c) (A ∪ B) ∩ C c
(d) A \ B (e) C \ D (f) B 4 D.
3. For any set A, what is A 4 A and A 4 ∅?
4. List 5 elements in each of the following sets. (i) {n ∈ N | n is divisible by 5}
(ii) {2n + 1 | n ∈ Z+ } (iii) P({1, 2, 3, 4, 5}) (iv) {2n | n ∈ N}
(v) {n ∈ N | n + 1 is prime}.
5. Let A = {n ∈ N | n ≤ 11}, B = {n ∈ N | n is even and n ≤ 20} and
E = {n ∈ N | n is even}. Find A \ B, A 4 B, E \ B and N \ E.
6. Let A = {x ∈ N | x is divisible by 2} and B = {y ∈ N | y is the sum of two odd numbers}. Is
A = B?
7. In each of the following cases determine whether A ⊂ B, A = B or A * B. Give reasons for
your answers.
(i) A is the set of all integers, B is the set of all real numbers x such that p(x) = 0 for some
quadratic polynomial p.
(ii) A is the set of all integer multiples of 2, B is the set of all integer multiples of −2.
(iii) A = {∅, 1, 2}, B = {∅, {2}, {∅}}.
8. Prove that for all sets A, B and C we have the identity

(A \ B) ∩ C = (A ∩ C) \ (B ∩ C).

9. Let A, B, C be sets. Simplify

(A ∪ (B ∩ C)) ∪ ((B c ∩ C c ) ∪ C)c .

10. For the sets A = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11} and B = {2, 3, 5, 7, 11}. Determine the following numbers
(a) | A | (b) | B | (c) | A ∪ B | (d) | A | + | B | − | A ∩ B |.
11. For any sets A, B, show that (A \ B)c = Ac ∪ B.
12. List all subsets of (i) {a, b, c} (ii) ∅.

14. Let A = {a, b, c} and B = {a, b, d}.
(i) List the ordered pairs in A × A.
(ii) List the ordered pairs in A × B.
(iii) list the set {(x, y) ∈ A × B | x = y}.
15. Let S = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4} and T = {0, 2, 4}.
(i) How many ordered pairs are in S × T and T × S?
(ii) List elements in {(m, n) ∈ S × T | m < n}.
(iii) List elements in {(m, n) ∈ T × S | mn ≥ 4}.
