ABSTRACT
The tittle of this study is “Challenges of English language teaching in rural
area: A case study at State Junior High School number 3 Sungai Lilin (a rural area in
South Sumatera)”. The main problem of this study is that there were some challenges
of English language teaching in rural area setting that encountered by the teacher of
English subject. The aim of this study was to find out the challenges of English
language teaching in rural area encountered by the teacher of English subject. The
participant of this study were two teachers of English subject at State Junior High
School number 3 Sungai Lilin in the academic year of 2020-2021. In this study, the
writer applied a qualitative study with ethnography methodological design, which
employ interview instrument for collecting the data. Meanwhile, in order to find out
the challenges of English language teaching in rural area encountered by the teacher of
English subject, the data obtained from the interview sessions were analysed by using
thematic analysis. The finding of this study revealed that there were eight challenges
of English language teaching in rural area encountered by the teacher of English
subject: 1) students’ lack of motivation, 2) lack of students’ learning activeness, 3)
students’ limited vocabulary, 4) socioeconomic factor, 5) teacher’s unfamiliarity with
IT, 6) unvaried teaching method, 7) limited teacher’s training, and 8) insufficient
school facility.
