The Rizal Law, Literature and Society
OVERVIEW:
In this chapter, the main focus is the study of the Rizal Law. This Rizal Law
explains the reasons on taking this course, “Life of Rizal”, and who were the
people behind the promulgation of this law.
This chapter is divided into three topics, namely; history of Rizal Law, honoring
Filipino national heroes, and Philippine National literature.
At the end of this chapter, you should be able to: explain and discuss the history of
Rizal Law and its important provisions, identify other heroes who helped in
attaining the Philippine independence and worked together in attaining such, and
to know other literatures written by Dr. Jose Rizal.
HISTORY OF RIZAL LAW
This part of the chapter will discuss the long history on how ACT NO. 1425 also
known as RIZAL LAW was promulgated and proposed in the Philippine
government and was successfully adapted. There are people who were against
the promulgation and some people who fought to it.
Take note that the Rizal Law was not to proclaim Dr. Jose Rizal as the National
Hero but to obliged the public and private institutions nationwide to educate
students about Rizal.

HONORING FILIPINO NATIONAL HEROES
In your Readings in the Philippine History, it has been discussed that there are
more Filipino Heroes like Andres Bonifacio, Emilio Jacinto, Tandang Sora and
others aside from Dr. Jose Rizal. There are groups of people in the University of
the Philippines who are claiming that it should be Andres Bonifacio who to
proclaim as the National Hero of the Philippines. Accordingly, among others
Andres Bonifacio have dedicated his life for attaining the freedom and
independence of the Philippines to its colonizers.
In this part of this chapter, it will discuss the qualifications on how the National
Hero was considered.

PHILIPPINE NATIONAL LITERATURE
The Noli Me Tangere and the El Filibusterismo are the two masterpiece of Dr.
Jose Rizal. This two novels contributes a lot in realizing nationalism in the heart of
every Filipino to fight for the independence and freedom of the Philippines. But
there are other writings made by Dr. Jose Rizal which were not published but has
good influence and good driving tool in executing authority and command in the
country. It is important that we should know these influences in order to realize to
importance of Philippine Nationalism that plays a vital role in the identity as a
Filipino people.
