RESTAURANT REVIEW

INSTRUCTIONS: Read your classmate’s menu carefully and imagine you have eaten at this restaurant. Write a
restaurant review of about 125–150 words
Structure:
• Title of your review + rating (how many stars out of 5?).
• Paragraph 1 – Introduction: name, type of restaurant, where it is and when you went, extra details.
• Paragraph 2 and 3– Positive and negative things. Describe what you ate and drank. Write about your
favourite dishes and why you liked them, and the ones you didn’t like. Use adjectives (delicious, spicy, fresh,
salty, etc.). Optional: describe the atmosphere: noisy, romantic, modern, traditional, elegant, etc.
• Paragraph 4 – Opinion. Give your overall opinion. Say if you would recommend it and why.

EXAMPLE 1. “El Sol Mediterráneo” – Amazing restaurant! ★★★★☆

Last Saturday, I went to El Sol Mediterráneo, a Mediterranean restaurant near the beach. I went there with my family
to celebrate the end of the school year. The place was bright and elegant, with plants and soft music that created a
relaxing atmosphere.
As starters we ordered hummus with bread and a Greek salad with olives, feta cheese, and tomatoes. For the main
course, I had grilled fish with lemon and herbs, and my parents chose seafood rice with prawns, mussels, and squid.
In my opinion, everything was fresh and tasty. The price was a bit expensive (for example, the rice was 20€!), but the
quality of the food was really good, so it was worth it.
However, the desserts were a bit disappointing. I tried a piece of orange cake that was too dry, and the coffee was
quite bitter. The service was friendly but a little slow because the restaurant was very busy.
In general, I really enjoyed El Sol Mediterráneo. The food was healthy and delicious, and the view of the sea made
the meal special. I would definitely recommend it!

EXAMPLE 2. “Vega” – A bit disappointing! ★★☆☆☆

Vega is a small Mexican restaurant in New York where you can have lunch or dinner. I went there last weekend with
some friends after a concert. We wanted to try something authentic and exotic.
The menu looked interesting, with dishes like tacos, burritos, and vegetarian pizzas. I ordered chicken fajitas with
peppers and onions. They had sweet corn, some cheese and some lettuce as well. They were quite tasty but too spicy
for me. My friends tried the veggie tacos, which were fresh and full of beans and avocado. We liked the quality, but
the portions were small, and the price was really expensive.
For dessert, I ordered cheesecake, but it was still frozen in the middle. They also didn’t have many drink options —
only water and beer, which was disappointing. The atmosphere was noisy, and the music was too loud, so it wasn’t
very relaxing.
In conclusion, Vega was a bit disappointing. The food had potential, but the service and desserts were poor. I
wouldn’t really recommend it unless you love very spicy food and don’t mind waiting.

Common questions

In El Sol Mediterráneo, the service is noted to be friendly but slow due to busyness, which slightly offsets the positive aspects of the dining experience. Despite this, the fresh and healthy food, coupled with a pleasant atmosphere, helps maintain a positive perception . At Vega, slow service, combined with poor dessert quality, contributes to an overall disappointing experience, indicating that friendly service might not sufficiently counteract other negatives like poor food elements or atmosphere . Service speed and friendliness are impactful on dining evaluations, especially when paired with other positive or negative dining elements.

In El Sol Mediterráneo, the positive reviews of fresh and delicious main courses significantly contribute to a favorable recommendation, as the superiority of these dishes outweighs the negatives of dry desserts and slow service . Conversely, in Vega, positive comments on taste are overshadowed by criticisms of spiciness, frozen dessert, and vulgar atmosphere, resulting in a less favorable recommendation . The balance of dish critiques—where positive reviews outnumber negatives—largely dictates the likelihood of a recommendation, emphasizing the importance of delivering consistently good food throughout the menu.

For El Sol Mediterráneo, the high prices are offset by the high quality and freshness of the food, leading to an overall positive perception and recommendation due to value congruence . In contrast, Vega's pricing is perceived as misaligned with the quality offered due to small portions and issues with dessert, which negates any positive potential and results in lower likelihood of recommendation . This suggests that when price is viewed as commensurate with quality, it enhances customer satisfaction and willingness to recommend; misalignment results in dissatisfaction and negative reviews.

El Sol Mediterráneo excels in providing a dining experience elevated by the freshness of ingredients, noted in dishes such as grilled fish and seafood rice, which resonates positively with customers despite minor issues like dry desserts . Vega's attempt at authenticity through traditional Mexican offerings meets mixed results: dishes are recognized for their fresh components, such as veggies in tacos, but authenticity is overshadowed by issues like excessive spice and small portions, leading to middling satisfaction . Freshness and authenticity are key to enhancing dining experiences when supported by other quality measures and affect customer satisfaction significantly.

In El Sol Mediterráneo, the emphasis on fresh, delicious dishes like grilled fish and seafood rice positively influences dining reviews, suggesting a strong correlation between taste and positive feedback, despite some shortcomings in dessert quality . For Vega, while some dishes like chicken fajitas were noted as tasty, the overly spicy nature and the poor presentation of frozen dessert detracted from the overall perception . Thus, both tasteful presentation and actual taste quality are critical in forming positive reviews, and failure in either can significantly impact overall dining satisfaction.

At El Sol Mediterráneo, although some menu items like the seafood rice are described as expensive, the high quality and freshness of the food justify the cost, thereby contributing to a perception of value despite higher prices . In contrast, Vega offers smaller portion sizes with expensive pricing, which detracts from the perceived value, as the portions are not commensurate with the cost, creating dissatisfaction . The conclusion is that customers perceive better value when the quality and portion sizes of menu items align with their pricing, as evidenced by contrasting experiences at these restaurants.

In El Sol Mediterráneo, the atmosphere is described as bright and elegant, featuring plants and soft music that creates a relaxing environment, which enhances the overall dining experience. This ambiance, coupled with the view of the sea, contributes positively by making the visit special despite the slow service during busy times . Conversely, Vega presents a noisy atmosphere with loud music, which detracts from relaxation and negatively impacts the dining experience, despite the interesting menu and tasty food options . Thus, the ambiance plays a crucial role in the perception of the dining experience at both restaurants.

In El Sol Mediterráneo, the selection of fresh Mediterranean dishes such as grilled fish and seafood rice contribute positively to customer satisfaction through their quality and taste, which are appreciated despite some disappointing dessert options . In Vega, the choice to offer a variety of authentic Mexican dishes like chicken fajitas and veggie tacos suggests potential satisfaction through taste; however, factors like high spice levels, small portions, and mediocre desserts lead to an overall lack of satisfaction . Thus, dish selection impacts satisfaction significantly, depending on the balance of taste, portion size, and pricing.

El Sol Mediterráneo delivers a holistic dining experience through a combination of a relaxing atmosphere featuring plants and soft music, friendly service, and high-quality menu offerings. The view of the sea further elevates the dining experience, making it memorable despite a few negatives like slow service and mediocre desserts . Vega, on the other hand, suffers from a disconnect between these elements: a noisy atmosphere with loud music detracts from potentially tasty but overpriced and small portions, combined with slow service and limited drink options, results in a suboptimal dining experience . A cohesive integration of atmosphere, service, and cuisine is crucial for a satisfying dining experience, as exemplified by these restaurants.

Customer expectations for authentic cuisine at Vega were initially high, given the menu's emphasis on traditional Mexican dishes. While some dishes met these expectations in terms of taste, the overall experience fell short due to high prices, small portions, and poor service. These unmet expectations led to a recommendation only for those who prefer very spicy food or do not mind waiting . The implication is that authenticity alone cannot drive positive reviews or recommendations without aligning with other aspects such as portion sizes, pricing, and service, which collectively shape customer perception.
