3. TMT Bars
11
Internship at BMM ISPAT Limited
This process gives TMT bars their unique properties, including high tensile strength,
superior ductility and resistance to corrosion and fire. Their ribbed surface also ensures
a strong bond with concrete. Because of these characteristics, TMT bars are ideal for a
variety of structures, from residential buildings and bridges to dams and earthquake-
resistant buildings. The production of TMT rebars involve a combination of plastic
deformation of steel in austenitic stage followed by quenching and further tempering.
The process controls at each critical operation ensure uniform properties in each rebar
and provides the TMT rebars with a soft ferrite and pearlite fine grained core, a strong
and tough tempered martensite layer imparting it with high ductility as well as strength
thus making it ideal for high rises, dams, bridges, individual houses and any critical
structures where high yield strength is required without compromising on the
elongation properties.

5. Alloy Steel
Alloy steel is a type of steel that is alloyed with a variety of elements in amounts
between 1% and 50% by weight, primarily to enhance its mechanical properties. While
regular steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, alloy steel includes other elements such as
chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum, and vanadium.
13
Internship at BMM ISPAT Limited
The specific elements and their proportions are carefully chosen to produce steel with
desired properties, including increased strength, hardness, toughness, corrosion
resistance, and wear resistance. These properties make alloy steel an essential material
in countless applications, from high-stress components in the automotive and aerospace
industries like gears and landing gear to structural elements in construction and
infrastructure like bridges and high-rise buildings. There are two main categories: low
alloy steel, which has a smaller percentage of alloying elements and is common for
general use, and high-alloy steel, which contains a larger percentage and is used for
more specialized, high-performance applications, such as stainless steel.
By products
1. Fly ash
In the steel industry, fly ash, a fine, powdery byproduct of coal combustion from
thermal power plants, is used primarily for its pozzolanic properties, which means it
reacts with calcium hydroxide and water to form cementitious compounds. While not a
direct component of steel itself, it is a valuable raw material for various downstream
and related applications. It is often used to produce fly ash bricks and other construction
materials, offering a more sustainable and lightweight alternative to traditional clay
bricks. Additionally, fly ash is a crucial ingredient in concrete production, where it acts
as a supplementary cementitious material. By partially replacing Portland cement, it
significantly reduces the overall carbon footprint of construction, improves the strength
and durability of the concrete, and lowers costs. In some cases, it can also be used as a
slagging agent or coolant in steelmaking converters after being processed into
briquettes, which helps to improve the slag structure and furnace operation.

2. Coal Tar
Coal tar is a brown or black liquid of extremely high viscosity. Coal tar is among the
by-products when coal is carbonized to make coke or gasified to make coal gas. Coal
tars are complex and variable mixtures of phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
(PAHs), and heterocyclic compounds. In the steel industry, coal tar is not used directly
in the production of steel itself, but rather as a valuable by-product generated during the
coking process. Coking is the high temperature heating of coal in the absence of air to
produce coke, a key fuel and reducing agent for blast furnaces. During this process,
volatile compounds and liquids are driven off from the coal, which are then condensed
and collected to form crude coal tar. This thick, black liquid is a complex mixture of
hundreds of valuable chemical compounds, including benzene, naphthalene, and
anthracene. These components are separated and refined to be used as a binder in the
production of carbon electrodes for electric arc furnaces, a crucial element in modern
steelmaking. Additionally, coal tar and its derivatives are used for manufacturing
refractory materials, protective coatings, and anti-corrosive paints for steel structures,
effectively turning a waste product into a valuable resource for both the steel and other
industries.

Porter’s Five Forces Model is a strategic tool developed by Michael E. Porter to analyze
the level of competition and attractiveness within an industry. It examines five key forces
that shape business dynamics. Competitive Rivalry: the intensity of competition among
existing firms in the market. Threat of new entrants: how easily new players can enter
the industry and challenge existing businesses. Bargaining Power of Suppliers: the
influence suppliers have over prices and quality of inputs.
24
Internship at BMM ISPAT Limited
Bargaining Power of Buyers: the ability of customers to demand lower prices or higher
quality. Threat of Substitutes: the risk of alternative products or services replacing
existing offerings.
Competitive Rivalry: The steel industry in India is highly competitive with large
players like Tata Steel, JSW Steel, and SAIL. BMM Ispat faces tough competition in
terms of pricing, technology, and customer base, making rivalry strong.
Threat of New Entrants: The steel sector requires massive capital investment, advanced
technology, and government clearances, which act as strong barriers to entry. Hence, the
threat of new entrants for BMM Ispat is relatively low, though regional players may
emerge on a smaller scale.
Bargaining Power of Suppliers: BMM Ispat depends on iron ore, coal, and other raw
materials. While it has access to local resources in Karnataka, fluctuations in raw material
quality and reliance on external suppliers especially for coking coal give suppliers
moderate power.
Bargaining Power of SBuyers: Steel buyers include construction companies,
infrastructure projects, and manufacturers. Since buyers have many alternatives among
established steel producers, their bargaining power is high, pushing companies like BMM
Ispat to maintain competitive pricing and quality.
Threat of Substitutes: Steel has limited substitutes in infrastructure and heavy
industries, though materials like aluminum, composites, or plastics can replace it in
specific applications. However, the overall threat of substitute’s remains low for BMM
Ispat, as steel is still indispensable in core sectors.
BMM Ispat Limited shows that the company faces high competitive rivalry from
established players like Tata Steel, JSW Steel, and SAIL, and also deals with high
bargaining power of buyers, who have multiple alternatives and demand competitive
pricing. The bargaining power of suppliers is moderate since raw material costs,
especially iron ore and coking coal, can impact operations despite some local access. The
threat of new entrants is low due to heavy capital, technology, and regulatory
requirements.
