Typing Test (at least 40 WPM) and
Accuracy Drill (Must passed 70% mark)
In the fast-paced digital age, the ability to use a computer
efficiently is a fundamental skill for both personal and professional
growth. One of the most essential competencies is keyboard
mastery, a foundation that allows individuals to communicate,
create, and perform tasks with speed and accuracy.
Before advancing to more complex applications of information
technology, learners must first develop the discipline of proper
typing, as this directly affects productivity and confidence in using
digital tools.
By understanding and practicing proper typing techniques,
students are better prepared to handle the increasing demands
of technology-driven tasks in education, the workplace, and
everyday life. Ultimately, this chapter equips learners with a
practical yet vital skill set that will support their growth as
responsible and competent individuals in the IT era.
Mastery of these skills is not only about typing faster, but also
about minimizing errors, preventing strain or injury, and
developing efficiency in navigating computer systems.
Topic 1
HOME ROW
HOME ROW KEYS
KEYS
HOME ROW KEYS
The middle row or Home Row Keys are the row of keys on the
computer keyboard your fingers rest on when not typing. For
example, on the standard QWERTY United States keyboard, the
home row keys for your left hand are A, S, D, and F, and your
right hand are J, K, l, and ; (semicolon).
For both hands, the thumbs rest on the spacebar. By positioning
your hands correctly on the home row keys, you can memorize
where all other keys on the keyboard are located.
WHY SHOULD
FINGERS BE PLACED
ON HOME ROW KEYS?
Placing your fingers on the home row
keys helps increase your typing speed
because it allows easy access to all
other keys surrounding those fingers.
Faster typing relies on each finger
pressing specific keys nearby, without
having to move your whole hand or
other fingers and ideally without
looking at the keyboard.

KEYBOARD FAMILIARIZATION
KEYBOARD FAMILIARIZATION
Keyboard familiarization is the process of getting to
know the different parts, keys, and functions of the
computer keyboard. Since the keyboard is one of
the primary input devices, learning its layout and
purpose helps users type efficiently, navigate
commands, and perform computer tasks with ease.

PARTS OF AA KEYBOARD
KEYBOARD
[Link] Keys – Includes letters (A–Z), numbers (0–9), and symbols;
similar to a typewriter.
[Link] Keys (F1–F12) – Located at the top, each key performs specific
tasks depending on the software (e.g., F1 = Help).
[Link] Keys – Such as Ctrl, Alt, Shift, Esc, Tab, and the Windows key, used
to modify commands or shortcuts.
[Link] Keys – Includes Arrow keys, Home, End, Page Up, Page Down,
Insert, Delete; helps move the cursor and screen view.
[Link] Keypad – Found on the right side (like a calculator), useful for
quick number entry.
[Link] Keys – Such as Enter/Return, Spacebar, Backspace, Caps Lock, Print
Screen, which serve unique purposes.
IMPORTANCE OF
OF KEYBOARD
KEYBOARD
FAMILIARIZATION
Typing Speed & Accuracy – Knowing key
positions improves efficiency in typing.
Shortcut Mastery – Familiarity allows the
use of shortcuts (e.g., Ctrl + C for copy,
Ctrl + V for paste), which saves time.
Work Productivity – Faster navigation
and input leads to better performance in
school, office, and personal tasks.
Digital Literacy – A foundation skill for
learning advanced computer operations.
