Double Pipe Heat Exchanger CFD Analysis

The assignment focuses on numerically simulating and analyzing heat transfer in a double pipe heat exchanger using FLUENT, with the goal of improving performance and developing analysis skills. Students must create computational geometry, perform grid refinement, and analyze various configurations of heat exchangers while documenting their findings in a group report. The report must include discussions on temperature profiles, pressure drops, heat transfer coefficients, and comparisons with existing literature, and is due by the end of week 11.

Advanced Flow Modelling-49312

CFD Group Assignment-3

Objectives

Objectives of this assignment are:

1. Numerically simulate and analyse the heat transfer in a double pipe heat exchanger
(Square Cross-section).
2. Numerically explore how this heat exchanger performance can be improved
3. Develop competency in using FLUENT with conjugate heat transfer
4. Develop analysis skills across analytical and numerical methods of assessing heat
exchanger performance

System to be modelled

The hot working fluid passes through the inner pipe and cold fluid passes through the outer
pipe.

Note: Apart from double-pipe heat exchangers, you can use any other type of heat
exchangers (Plate, PCB, etc). You can use any dimensions as well.

The fluid flow properties for the hot and the cold fluid

Hot fluid mass flow rate 0.5 kg/s

Cold fluid mass flow rate 0.5 kg/s

Hot fluid temperature 1500C

Cold fluid temperature 300C

Absolute pressure for hot fluid 101325 Pa

Absolute pressure for cold fluid 101325 Pa

Fluids (water)

Procedure and discussion points:

1. Create the computational geometry in DesignModeler/ Solidwroks/any CAD software

with the mentioned dimensions.
2. Build an appropriate mesh for the model and perform a grid refinement study.
3. Using the converged grid, check the iterative convergence.
4. Aluminium double pipe heat exchanger, Parallel flow with

½ hot and ½ cold

5. Cooper double pipe heat exchanger, Parallel flow with

1/2 hot and 1/2 cold

6. Aluminium double pipe heat exchanger, Counter flow with

½ hot and ½ cold

7. Cooper double pipe heat exchanger, Counter flow with

1/2 hot and 1/2 cold

8. Draw the temperature contour at the cold outlet, hot outlet, and whole domain for
all cases and discuss your results.
9. Plot the temperature profile along a selected line from inlet to outlet for all cases
and discuss.
10. Plot the pressure contour and calculate the pressure drop at outlet of the domain.
11. Draw the wall shear for all cases and discuss.
12. Plot the turbulence kinetic energy (if applicable) and discuss.
13. Plot the vector profile and discuss.
14. Calculate the heat transfer coefficients and compare.
15. Calculate the Log Mean Temperature Difference for all cases and discuss.
16. Calculate the heat transfer effectiveness for all cases.
17. Calculate the Nusselt number from the following correlation and discuss;
18. Connect your results with the existing literature.

Submission:

A written report is to be submitted including a short introduction and conclusion (one page
long for each). The report should contain a discussion of the points bolded above with
evidence to support the discussion together with relevant figures such as figures illustrating
the mesh or element distribution, plots of the velocity profiles, contour plots, etc.

A single copy of the group report is to be submitted no later than 11:59pm (midnight)
Friday, week 11. Only 1 report submission per group. Please note that no late submission will
be accepted for evaluation.

The report should have a list of group member names and student numbers.

The report should be signed and dated by each group member. Without signature individual
mark will not be updated. Individual contributions need to mention with the final report. No
individual submission will be accepted.

Practical and Technical reports are written IMPERSONAL, PAST TENSE, THIRD
PERSON.
