Unit Conversion: mm, cm, m

Basic Units of Length

Unit Symbol Used to measure

Millimeter mm Very small lengths (e.g., thickness of a coin)

Centimeter cm Small lengths (e.g., length of a pencil)

Meter m Bigger lengths (e.g., height of a door)

Conversion Rules
• 1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm)
• 1 centimeter (cm) = 10 millimeters (mm)
• 1 meter (m) = 1000 millimeters (mm)

How to Convert

To convert meters to centimeters:


Multiply by 100
Example:
3 m = 3 × 100 = 300 cm

To convert centimeters to meters:


Divide by 100
Example:
250 cm = 250 ÷ 100 = 2.5 m

To convert centimeters to millimeters:


Multiply by 10
Example:
8 cm = 8 × 10 = 80 mm
To convert millimeters to centimeters:
Divide by 10
Example:
90 mm = 90 ÷ 10 = 9 cm

To convert meters to millimeters:


Multiply by 1000
Example:
2 m = 2 × 1000 = 2000 mm

To convert millimeters to meters:


Divide by 1000
Example:
5000 mm = 5000 ÷ 1000 = 5 m

Memory Trick:

"Big to small = multiply"


"Small to big = divide"

Practice Examples:
1. Convert 4 m to cm = 4 × 100 = 400 cm
2. Convert 1200 mm to m = 1200 ÷ 1000 = 1.2 m
3. Convert 75 cm to mm = 75 × 10 = 750 mm
4. Convert 360 mm to cm = 360 ÷ 10 = 36 cm
