LIBREOFFICE WRITER
INTRODUCTION
LibreOffice is a free and open-source office suite
developed by The Document Foundation. It is one
of the most popular alternatives to Microsoft
Office and works on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
It includes several applications that make it a
powerful and complete office package:
Writer – for word processing (like MS Word)
Calc – for spreadsheets (like MS Excel)
Impress – for presentations (like MS
PowerPoint)
Base – for databases
Draw – for vector graphics and flowcharts
Math – for writing mathematical formulas
LibreOffice supports many file formats, including
Microsoft Office formats, and uses the Open
Document Format (ODF) as its default.
It is widely used because it is free, easy to use,
customizable, and regularly updated by the
open-source community.
1) TEMPLATE
LibreOffice Writer – Template
Aim:
To learn how to create and use templates in
LibreOffice Writer.
Procedure:
[Link] LibreOffice Writer.
[Link] a document with
the required formatting
(e.g., school letterhead,
resume, or report format).
[Link] on File → Templates → Save As
Template.
[Link] the template a name and save it.
[Link] use it, go to File → New → Templates, then
select your saved template.
Result:
A template was successfully created and used
to make a new document in LibreOffice Writer.
2) INSERTING IMAGES
Aim:
learn image insertion and formatting in
documents.
Software Required:
LibreOffice Writer
Procedure:
[Link] LibreOffice Writer and place the cursor
where the image is required.
[Link] an image using any of the following
methods:
o Insert → Image → From File
o Drag and Drop an image directly from
the file explorer into the document
o Copy and Paste an image from another
application or source
[Link] image will appear in the document.
[Link] the size, alignment, and text
wrapping using the formatting toolbar or
right-click menu.
Task:
Insert your school logo and align it at the top-
right corner of the page.
Result:
Image was successfully inserted using different
methods, resized, and aligned in the
document.
3) CROPPING AN IMAGE
Aim:
To insert and crop images in a document.
Procedure:
[Link] LibreOffice Writer and insert an image
into the document (using Insert → Image →
From File or drag & drop).
[Link] the image by clicking on it.
[Link] to the Format → Image → Crop option or
right-click the image and choose Crop.
[Link] the cropping handles (black lines on
the image edges) to remove unwanted parts.
[Link] Enter or click outside the image to
apply the crop.
Result:
The image was successfully inserted and
cropped to the required size.
4) DRAWING OBJECTS
Aim:
To draw shapes and apply colour formatting in
a document.
Procedure:
[Link] LibreOffice Writer.
[Link] the Drawing Toolbar if it is not visible:
o Go to View → Toolbars → Drawing.
[Link] on the desired shape from the toolbar
(rectangle, circle, arrow, etc.) and draw it on
the document.
[Link] fill the shape with colour:
o Select the shape → Right-click → Area →
Choose a fill colour → Click OK.
o Alternatively, use the Fill Colour button
on the Drawing Toolbar.

7) SUBTOTAL
Aim:
To calculate subtotals for categorized data.
Software Required:
LibreOffice Calc
Procedure:
[Link] LibreOffice Calc and create a worksheet
with sales data, including columns such as
Product, Quantity, Price.
[Link] the data range you want to calculate
subtotals for.
[Link] to Data → Subtotals.
[Link] the Subtotals dialog box:
o Group by: Select the category column
(e.g., Product).
o Use function: Choose the calculation
method (Sum, Average, Count, etc.).
o Add subtotal to: Select the columns to
calculate (e.g., Quantity, Price).
[Link] OK. Subtotals will appear in the
worksheet for each category.
8) DATA CONSOLIDATION
Aim:
To combine data from multiple sheets.
Software Required:
LibreOffice Calc
Procedure:
[Link] at least two worksheets with similar
data.
[Link] to Data → Consolidate.
[Link] the ranges from both sheets that you
want to combine.
[Link] the selected data into a single
worksheet.
Result:
Data from multiple sheets is successfully
combined into one consolidated sheet.
9) What-if Analysis
Aim: To analyze different outcomes using Goal
Seek & Scenarios.
Software Required: LibreOffice Calc
Procedure:
Goal Seek:
1. Create a formula-based calculation.
2. Use Tools → Goal Seek to find the required
input for a desired output.
Scenarios:
1. Create a dataset (e.g., monthly budget).
2. Use Tools → Scenarios to prepare different
possibilities (Best case, Average case, Worst
case).
Task:
- Use Goal Seek to find marks needed to achieve
80% average.
- Create 3 scenarios for a monthly budget (high
income, medium income, low income
