STA 116: Introduction to Statistics

TUTORIAL 2

Question 1
50 employees in an electronic factory agreed to take part in an experiment, part of which
involved timing how long it took each person to assemble a new component. The times taken in
minutes were as follows:
15 19 18 18 16 19 24 17 21 13
21 26 19 30 19 27 20 30 25 20
18 36 17 39 11 33 22 17 29 18
35 20 28 19 32 20 19 26 12 22
17 25 14 31 16 21 10 18 15 16
i) Construct a frequency table to display the above data.
ii) From the frequency table created, can we determine how many employees took 23
minutes to assemble a component? If no, why not?
iii) Determine from an appropriate ogive, the number of employees who took less than 31
minutes to assemble a component.
iv) Suppose a Certificate of Merit is to be awarded to all employees who take at most 15
minutes to assemble a component, use the ogive to determine the number of
employees who would receive such an award.
v) Draw a histogram for the frequency table
vi) Use MS Excel to present the histogram and the ogive.

Question 2
Distinguish between the following statistical terms:
i) Class mark and class interval
ii) Cumulative relative frequency and relative frequency

Question 3
Real customers’ expenditure for the year 2001 – component categories (seasonally adjusted
P’000 million, 1991 prices)

Durable Alcohol & Clothing & Energy Other Rent & Health
goods Food tobacco Footwear products goods rates services
16 22 14 11 11 16 17 37

i) Draw an appropriate diagram using MICROSOFT EXCEL to illustrate the relative

shares of real customers’ expenditure in 2001.
ii) Comment on the diagram.

Question 4
The following table gives the annual earnings of the full-time employees of a textile company in
Gaborone.

Earnings P’000 Number of Employees

Less than 3 36
3-4 100
4-5 46

6-7 608
7-8 200
8-10 50
10-14 15
More than 14 5
Total 1200

i) Draw a histogram of the above data.

ii) Superimpose a frequency polygon on the histogram and determine the number of
people who earn between P11000 and P13000.

Question 6
i) What is a qualitative variable, give an example?
ii) Give one graph that can be used to display information on a qualitative variable.

Question 5
i) Describe a stem and leaf diagram
ii) What are the advantages of using a stem-and leaf diagram?
