Grammar: Be Forms
Introduction to Be forms:
In English grammar, "BE forms" -These forms
are used to indicate a state of being, existence,
identity, or condition and very important in
constructing sentences.
Be forms ~ am, is, are, was & were

We use Be Forms for:


[Link] - name of people, places, animals
& things

[Link] - he, she, it, we, they...

[Link] - descriptive words (eg: nice,


kind…)

1. Present Simple:
 I am
 You are
 (Singular ) -He/She/It is
 (Plural) - We/They are

[Link] Simple:
 I was
 You were
 (Singular) -He/She/It was
 (Plural) - We/They were

We also use Be forms for:

Countable Nouns

Uncountable Nouns

Examples of Uncountable nouns:


Salt – There is too much salt in the food

Money – RM 100 is very expensive for the shirt

Time – The time is 5.00pm

Hair – My hair is long

Food – The food in that restaurant was tasty

Contraction (Short Form)
a short form of a word or combination of words
that is often used instead of the full form in
spoken English

It’s – (contraction) it is/ it has
Who’s – who is/ who has
He’s – he is/ he has
She’s – she is/ she has
You’ll – you will
The difference between is/ has
He’s - Contraction
He is nice – describing
He has a red car – ownership
Note:
The be form is one of the most important verbs in
English because it's used in many ways,
including:
 Introducing yourself: You can use be forms
to share personal information like your name,
age, or origin.
Ex: I am John and I am from Malaysia.

 Describing things: You can use be forms to


describe people, places, or objects.
Ex: This place is amazing

 Expressing feelings: You can use be forms


to express feelings.
Ex: She is feeling happy
 Creating tenses: You can use be forms as
an auxiliary verb to create continuous or
passive tenses.
Ex: We are studying now (present
continuous tense) – Happening now

English.

Wrong: Amily eaten already?
Correct: Have you eaten, Amily?
The usage of Yes & No Questions

Affirmative - relating to a statement that shows


agreement or says "yes"

Negative - A negative sentence or phrase is one
that contains a word such as "not", "no", "never",
or "nothing".

Using Be forms in our


everyday life
1. Greetings and Introductions 问候和介绍

Focus on: Introducing yourself, using “to be” for identity, and talking about
origin.

2. Daily Routines 日常生活

Focus on: Present simple tense, time, and frequency adverbs (always, usually,
sometimes).

3. Shopping 购物

Focus on: Asking about prices, practicing numbers, and polite questions.

4. Asking for Directions 问路

Focus on: Giving directions, prepositions of place, and polite phrases.

5. Ordering Food 订购食物

Focus on: Polite requests, food vocabulary, and transactional language.

6. Talking About Weather 谈论天气

Focus on: Weather vocabulary and comparisons

7. Making Plans 制定计划


Focus on: Future intentions, making suggestions, and using “would you like.”

8. Talking About Hobbies 谈论爱好

Focus on: Talking about likes and hobbies using “like + verb-ing.”

Flexible - able to change or be changed easily


according to the situation

Schedule - a list of planned activities or things to be


done showing the times or dates when they are

Conduct - to organize and perform a particular activity

Enroll - to put yourself or someone else onto the


official list of members of a course, college, or group
Telling time, the opposite way

well as writing.

Profile

Punctuation - (the use of) special
symbols that you add to writing to separate
phrases and sentences to show that something is
a question, etc.

Based on our writing today Online Profile, we are able


to understand how to use:

1. Capital letter
2. Punctuation accordingly.

We are also able to apply what we have learnt in our


job description, work purposes, business and
customers.
Examples of Online Profiles
I am Chin Ting, I’m 41 years old. I live in Teluk
Intan,Perak.
I’m housewife, I’m married and have one child. I like
singing and watching movies during my free time.
Besides that, I enjoy travelling and cycling as well.

I am Lee Pin, my surname is Kwan. I am 60 Years old. I


live in Seremban. I am a housewife. There are 5 people
in my family. I have a son and two daughters. I like
reading and cooking during my free time. Besides that,
I enjoy watching movies.

I'm Anne Lai from Kuching, Sarawak. I am currently


single and work in the food manufacturing industry. I
love my job and always enjoy the challenges of every
task. One of my favourite quotes is from John Quincy
Adams: "If your actions inspire others to dream
more, learn more, do more, and become more,
you are a leader."
