Introduction
In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been increasingly applied in language
classrooms worldwide. From grammar correction tools to AI-powered writing assistants,
these technologies are reshaping the way students learn and produce language (Nguyen &
Le, 2022). Particularly in the area of academic writing, AI tools such as ChatGPT,
Grammarly, and Quillbot are widely used by students to generate, revise, and refine their
written work (Tran, 2023). As a result, AI is becoming a common and influential
presence in EFL learning environments (Pham & Nguyen, 2021).
While numerous studies have highlighted the positive impacts of AI on language teaching
and learning—such as increased efficiency, personalized feedback, and learner autonomy
(Brown, 2020; Vu & Do, 2022)—research on its potential negative effects remains
limited. In particular, the influence of AI tools on academic writing at the tertiary level is
not well understood. There is growing concern among educators that excessive reliance
on AI may hinder students’ ability to think critically, write independently, and develop
essential academic writing skills (Hoang, 2022; Lee, 2021).
This study aims to investigate the negative effects of AI on academic writing from the
perspectives of EFL instructors at a Vietnamese university.
Research Objectives:
1. To explore the perceived negative impacts of AI on students' development of academic
writing skills.
2. To examine how AI use affects instructors’ teaching of academic writing.
Research Questions:
1. How do EFL instructors perceive AI’s negative effects on students’ development of
academic writing?
2. How do EFL instructors perceive AI’s negative effects on their teaching of academic
writing?
The findings of this research are expected to provide valuable insights for both students
and instructors. For students, the study may raise awareness of the risks of
overdependence on AI tools and promote more mindful use in academic writing (Nguyen
et al., 2023). For instructors, the study may help in designing more effective teaching
strategies that address the challenges posed by AI integration in the classroom (Le &
Pham, 2022).
