📚 UNIT I – INTRODUCTION

BA4171: Research Methods and Intellectual Property Rights

🟦 1. Explain the significance of research in modern times.

Research plays a vital role in modern society by driving progress in science, technology, business,
healthcare, and education. It helps generate new knowledge, solve practical problems, and support
informed decision-making. In business, research supports product development, market analysis,
and innovation. In social sciences, it uncovers patterns in human behavior and helps create effective
policies. With globalization and rapid technological changes, research is essential for staying
competitive, improving quality of life, and addressing global challenges like climate change and
public health crises.

🟦 2. Discuss the different types of research with examples.

Research can be classified as:

1. Basic (Pure) Research: Conducted to develop theories and expand knowledge.
• Example: Studying quantum physics principles.
2. Applied Research: Solves specific, practical problems.
• Example: Research to improve agricultural yield.
3. Descriptive Research: Describes characteristics of a population or phenomenon.
• Example: Survey on consumer buying habits.
4. Analytical Research: Analyzes existing information to explain patterns or relationships.
• Example: Studying GDP trends to explain economic performance.
5. Exploratory Research: Investigates an area with little prior knowledge.
• Example: Researching new diseases.
6. Qualitative & Quantitative Research: Based on the nature of data.
• Qualitative focuses on meaning; quantitative on numbers.

🟦 3. Explain the different steps involved in the research process.

The research process is a systematic sequence of steps:

1. Identification of Research Problem: Choose a topic or issue to explore.
2. Literature Review: Study existing research to understand what’s already known.
3. Formulation of Hypothesis: Develop a testable prediction or assumption.
4. Research Design: Decide methodology – qualitative/quantitative, sampling, tools, etc.
5. Data Collection: Use surveys, interviews, experiments, etc., to gather data.
6. Data Analysis: Use statistical or thematic methods to interpret data.
7. Interpretation of Results: Evaluate findings in relation to the hypothesis.
8. Report Writing: Prepare a research report or thesis.
9. Presentation & Dissemination: Share results with stakeholders or academic community.

🟦 4. Explain the role of a researcher in research.

The researcher is the key driver of the research process. Their roles include:

 Identifying relevant and meaningful research problems.

 Designing an appropriate research methodology.
 Collecting and analyzing data ethically and objectively.
 Interpreting findings in line with research objectives.
 Ensuring the validity and reliability of results.
 Reporting findings accurately and avoiding plagiarism or data manipulation.
 Maintaining professional integrity and following ethical guidelines throughout the study.

🟦 5. Compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative research.

Basis Qualitative Research Quantitative Research

Nature of Data Non-numerical (words, meanings) Numerical (numbers, statistics)
Purpose To explore ideas, understand phenomena To measure, test hypotheses
Methods Used Interviews, focus groups, observations Surveys, experiments, questionnaires
Data Analysis Thematic, content analysis Statistical techniques
Outcome In-depth understanding Generalizable results
Sample Size Small, non-random Large, often random
Research Approach Subjective and interpretive Objective and deductive
