CE3481 - STRENGTH OF MATERIALS AND FLUID MACHINERY LABORATORY

(Regulations 2021)

1. Conduct Rock well hardness test on mild steel, brass and aluminium specimens.

2. Find the stiffness and rigidity modulus of the given open coiled helical spring.

3. Perform the torsion test on the given specimen to find the following

1. Modulus of rigidity

2. Shear stress.

4. Determine the Rockwell hardness no. of the given specimens.

(i) Brass

(ii) Mild steel

(iii) Cast iron

5. Using tension testing machine determine the yield stress, ultimate stress, breaking stress,
percentage of reduction in area, percentage of elongation over a gauge length and young’s modulus
for the given mild steel rod.

6. Find the hardness of the given material using Brinell hardness testing machine.

(i) aluminum

(ii) Cast iron

(iii) Mild steel

7. Determine the mechanical properties of the given specimen (at least two samples to be given for
each material) before and after hardening.

8. Conduct a tensile test on a mild steel specimen and determine the following.

(i) Limit of proportionality (iv) Ultimate strength

(ii) Elastic limit (v) Young’s modulus of elasticity

(iii) Yield strength (vi) Percentage elongation

9. Find the modulus of rigidity by conducting torsion test on mild steel specimen.

10. Conduct Rock well hardness test on brass and aluminium specimens.

11. Determine the Co-efficient of discharge(Cd) of a Venturimeter in 25mm diameter of the pipe

12. Determine the maximum efficiency and draw the performance characteristic curves by using Single
Stage Centrifugal Pump.

13. Determine the maximum efficiency and draw the performance characteristic curves by using
Reciprocating Pump

14. Carryout an experiment to determine the friction factor when the fluid flows through the pipe.

15. Determine the efficiency of Pelton wheel and draw the performance characteristic curves

16. Perform an experiment to determine the flow in a pipe using venturimeter and determine the Co-
efficient of discharge.

17. Determine the maximum efficiency of Reciprocating Pump and draw the following graphs

i. Discharge vs Head

ii. Discharge vs input power

iii. Discharge vs efficiency

18. Determine the friction factor when the fluid flows through a15mm and 40mm diameter of the pipes.

Pump by using constant speed method.
