V. SIMULATION RESULTS
The proposed system takes a signal input and converts it Fig. 8. Speed Model Linearization
into an angle position that limits the air flow through the
engine to control the rpm of the car. To create a relation
between the engine speed and the throttle position in degrees,
we generated a linearization of an “engine speed model”
through MATLAB to get the frequency values that operate the
rpm values of the car engine, as shown in Fig. 8.
We tested the values based on three coordinate locations
around the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma in
Edmond, Oklahoma. A google map picture that shows the
three test locations is shown in Fig. 9. The speed limit and the
coordinates of the three test locations are reported in Table 1.

To convert the speed limit values into rpm we used the

the RPM are 5020 RPM at 60 mile/hour, 3770 RPM at 45

RPM values in the MATLAB to obtain the Throttle position
values in degrees.
After evaluating the throttle angular position values, we
implemented them in our GUI simulation to test the PID
system and tune the gain values. Considering no PID tuning,
the results of the desired and the actual engine speed (in RPM)

Common questions

The main components involved in the PID controller implementation include a microcontroller that uses proportional, integral, and differential gains (k_P, k_I, k_D) to process errors detected by the system. These components are tuned using the Simulink software suite to provide the proper control signal to the ECU, which, in turn, adjusts the throttle position for speed regulation. This setup ensures that the speed remains at the desired reference value set by road speed limits detected via GPS .

The throttle position and vehicle speed are intricately connected in the system implementation. The electronic throttle control regulates air intake based on pedal input, influencing engine RPM. To achieve the desired speed, the PID controller uses input from the GPS and vehicle speed sensors to adjust the throttle position precisely. By maintaining appropriate throttle positions, the system can sustain vehicle speed within the limits set by road conditions, showing direct control over engine power and subsequent speed .

Modern cruise control systems, such as the Adaptive Cruise Controller (ACC), enhance vehicle safety by incorporating smart systems that monitor the surrounding environment and adjust the car's speed accordingly through radar technology. This system allows the vehicle to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles by adjusting the throttle based on traffic conditions, therefore ensuring safer driving dynamics .

Using a CAN BUS library in the microcontroller allows efficient communication with the ECU, enhancing data exchange reliability and minimizing latency issues. This setup ensures rapid processing of control commands and sensor feedback processes, crucial for the real-time operations of the speed control system. It also allows compatibility with standard automotive networking systems, thereby integrating seamlessly with other vehicular systems .

The proposed system aims to reduce vehicular accidents related to speeding by establishing live communication between the cruise control system and the onboard GPS module to limit vehicle speed to the maximum allowable road speed. By using the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to electronically control the throttle, the system regulates the engine's rotational velocity, thereby preventing the vehicle from exceeding road speed limits. This control over speed can potentially reduce the number of speeding-related accidents .

The power supply setup contributes to the system's reliability by providing a steady 5V supply from the car battery, ensuring consistent operational performance. A voltage regulator is utilized to prevent delays that might occur because of fluctuations in the system's power supply, maintaining system integrity and real-time responsiveness critical for a speed control interface .

The use of a GUI is significant as it provides a user-friendly platform for interfacing with the speed control system. It makes the system accessible and comprehensible for the user by displaying current vehicle speed and updates effectively. It aids in testing and visualizing system performance during simulation, thereby facilitating easier adjustments and optimizations in response to real-time data from the PID controller .

The system employs a non-linear PID controller to efficiently control the electronic throttle by providing high-precision control over the throttle plate. Such a controller accounts for non-linearities in the throttle system and dynamically adjusts the proportional, integral, and derivative parameters. This capability allows the ECU to apply precise control signals leading to the desired RPMs that correspond with predetermined speed limits, reducing errors and ensuring smoother throttle operations .

The system utilizes GPS technology by employing the Neo-6M GPS module to ascertain the vehicle's coordinates and determine the corresponding speed limits for different road sections. The GPS module sends these coordinates to the microcontroller, which then uses this data to control the engine speed so the vehicle does not exceed these limits. The Neo-6M GPS module communicates with the system via specific ports on the microcontroller and is characterized by high-level precision and accuracy to ensure effective speed limit enforcement .

The system includes a SIM900 GSM module designed to alert against attempts to bypass the speed-limiting control. This module monitors driver behavior, particularly attempts to disable the GPS module. When such an attempt is detected, it sends an SMS alert to a registered contact number, which can inform parents or company supervisors of the unauthorized activity, enhancing security and compliance with speed regulations .
