Span of control:
In the partnership, the span of control is wide since 2 owners are directly
responsible for 5 workers.
In the private company, the span is narrower because each manager only looks
after 3 workers.
Chain of command:
In the partnership, the chain of command is short because workers directly
report to the owners.
In the private company, the chain is longer since workers → managers →
board of directors.
(c) Two consequences of a wider span of control
1. More independence for workers – since one boss is handling many people, employees
might have to solve small problems themselves. This can make them feel trusted but
also sometimes confused.
2. Less attention from managers – with too many people to manage, owners or bosses
may not give enough feedback or support, which could lower performance.
