There are almost 400 different kinds of sharks. Each kind of sharks look different, has a unique
diet and behaves differently. Some sharks are longer than a school bus while others are small
enough to fit in a fish tank. Sharks come in all kinds of colours, most of the time; their colour
helps them to blend in their surroundings. Most sharks live in salt water but some can also live in
fresh water. Sharks are actually a type of fish but there are some similarities and differences
between sharks and a typical fish.
Fish skeletons are made of bones while shark skeleton are made of cartilage. Cartilage is the
bendy, tough substance in people’s ears and noses. Like other fish, sharks have gills that help
them to breathe. Fish get oxygen from water using their gills and the water needs to move over
their gills for them to get enough oxygen, hence they need to swim in water that has a strong
current.
