INTRODUCTION & METHODOLOGY

➢ Our project delves into Deep Water, a chapter taken from the autobiography
Of Men and Mountains written by William Douglas. This work of writing is not
merely a personal experience but goes beyond the depths of fear and
determination for its conquering. In this elaborative lesson, Douglas
remembers his childhood experience of almost drowning and how this very
incident shaped his perception about fear, survival, and human will.

➢ This project's main purpose was to capture the essence of this chapter in an
interactive, creative medium. We scripted and laid out a scene that depicts
how Douglas started to face his deep-seated phobia of water and finally
conquered it. Through the script, we are not only able to visualize what had
happened but to understand deeply the psychological aspects which Douglas
mentioned throughout the chapter.

➢ Other from the script, we have also prepared a PowerPoint presentation which
will help in explaining the chapter. The presentation gives the critical themes,
symbols and lessons that the author is putting across to ensure clarity on the
deeper meaning of the story. We are trying to create a multi-dimensional
experience whereby the audience connect with the story by combining both
visual and performative elements.

➢ This project instills in one the spirit of persistence, bravery, and mental
toughness, which even Douglas seemed to possess throughout. We plan on
presenting not just a review of the chapter, but more of a visual of what the
picture of its messages is, for a deeper appreciation of the relevance and
meaning of the text.

➢ This project is evidence of the strength of literature that can stir introspection
and reflections in each individual and illuminate how a life of experiences can
even be ironically molded into strong narratives touching on universal human
emotions.

SCRIPT
Background sound of water flowing

Voice over (William Douglas)

How much ever we try, to erase a particular incident from our

memory, at times, it is just not possible to do it. The more
and more I want to forget about it , the more and more it
keeps striking my mind.

Panting....

Scene 1: Douglas is sitting in a chair and is in call with a

friend who is inviting him to a get together which is arranged
in a beach/pool party. Douglas due to his fear of water
rejects the invite. His friend insists, Douglas shouts at him
rudely and cuts the call. Another friend of Douglas enters the
scene. He talks with Douglas to console him and tries to get
him out of the trauma. Douglas explains what happened to him.
Outfit : Dark Shade

Shot 1:
Douglas falls into the swimming pool. He struggles and puts
efforts to survive...

Shot 2 [Pull out (Close up to mid)] :

Douglas is thinking about the incident without paying

attention to what his friend is talking in the phone. After
few seconds he comes back to consciousness.

Douglas
Umm sorry what were you saying?.. Oh about that party.. Sorry,
I don't think I can make it. No.. No I can't come.. Ayy, stop.
You guys won't understand what I am going through. So will you
please stop bothering me and leave me alone for sometime?!
-------------------------------------
Douglas cuts the call and takes a deep breath with eyes
closed.

(Camera pulled towards right/left ; Zoom out)

He sees his friend beside him

Douglas
When did you come?

Friend
When you were shouting at him. What happened to you? You seem
frustrated and zoned out nowadays. You lost interest in things
or something?

Douglas
Y'all won't understand what I am going through

Friend
You never shared anything to us. Give us an opportunity to
understand.

Douglas
Leave it. Never mind. It's hard to explain.

Friend
Well, I forgot to tell you. We are going to publish your
invention in our school magazine.

Douglas
Invention? What invention?
Friend
You've found that not sharing things with anyone and not
taking part in occasions as a solution to PTSD isn't it. It
might be really helpful.. So yeah

Douglas smiles

Friend
Open up

Douglas explains him what happened that day

Douglas
That day I was just gazing at the pool, it reminded me of a
bad experience I had in a beach. A bully teased me and pushed
me into the pool, the deeper side.

Friend
Mm.. I get it.. It's hard to come out of this trauma..

Douglas
So now that you know. You tell me if the way I am behaving is
right or wrong. Think from my pov

Friend
See.. From your pov.. What u r doing maybe right.. But you
shouting at the people who are trying to help you.. U think if
it's the right thing to do..
How many more

Douglas
Don't ask me how many more days am gonna be like this. I don't
know..
Friend
I'll tell you one thing. I am sure you're gonna be a famous,
influential guy in future. People are gonna write biographies
about you. That time these kinda bad incidents are required
you know. You are gonna motivate people through your story. So
don't give this story a sad ending.

(Douglas felt better when his friend said that.. At the same
time, he has still not overcome the fear. Due to the mixed
emotions, his eyes started to fill with tears. He closed his
eyes and turned away from his friend. He wiped his eyes amd
turned towards his friend but couldn't find him. Douglas
messaged him. His friend replied that "This is probably the
right time to leave you alone". Douglas kept the phone aside.
He thought about that incident again, but this time he wasn't
scared. He decided to overcome his fear.

THE END
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

Result: Our project was able to successfully deliver the key themes and emotions within the
chapter by using a script of a real-life enactment of Deep Water by William Douglas along
with a PowerPoint presentation. We were able to recreate through the script the intense
emotions of fear and determination from Douglas and enhance our understanding of the
struggle and eventual triumph of Douglas.

The PowerPoint presentation further assisted our project in that it broke down the chapter
into more finer points and gave us a structured analysis of the chapter. It helped us guide
through the author's mindset, his relationship with fear, and what he had learned from
overcoming it. Our short presentation was helpful in reinforcing the main theme of the
story; that is, persistence amidst fear.

Overall, our enactments in real life combined with the presentation enabled us to give both
a creative and an analytical look into Deep Water. This was quite effective in illustrating how
much Douglas's experience played an important role, while at the same time encouraging
reflection on how one's personal struggles can indeed facilitate growth.

Conclusion: The project has really been enlightening-a true discovery into William Douglas's
Deep Water-and not just a specific review of the chapter, but also one that widens into a
reflection on human resilience. We were able to make use of our script enactment to
illustrate how literature can be translated into real-life experiences, thereby bringing
concepts such as fear to more human elements for our growth. This exercise in scripting and
presenting allowed us to be in Douglas' shoes and get a deeper appreciation of his courage
and determination against his fear and universal themes of survival and tough resilience.

It was through the PowerPoint presentation that we further deepened our understanding
on the importance of the chapter through its more systematic review. This is how we had
the opportunity to point out all those current themes that were very important and crucial
to mention, such as how to overcome fear, the significance of persistence, or even trauma
and its psychological impact. In so doing, the project not only gave us a deeper insight into
the text but also gave us a chance to identify with the broader human themes it tackled,
hence the lasting impressions of the life story of Douglas and what it portrays.
GROUP REFLECTION
This project gave us a great opportunity to explore further our group work both as a team
and as individual interpreters. The scripting of Deep Water allowed the group to appreciate
the emotional depth of the story and taught us how to portray challenging themes, such as
fear and perseverance, through writing. This process also taught us the importance of
teamwork, since each one brought different perspectives to the project that helped us make
a good presentation together. This indeed helped in enhancing not only our analytical
capability but also our communicative and creative expression as a team. We thank one and
other on the completion of this project successfully together.
