Understanding Scientific Variables in Experiments

The document outlines various experiments involving characters from SpongeBob SquarePants to illustrate the scientific method, focusing on independent and dependent variables, control groups, and conclusions. Each experiment tests a hypothesis related to behavior or health, such as the effects of cookies on a snail's willingness to bathe or the impact of free lunches on employee productivity. Additionally, there are sections for identifying branches of biology and reflecting on the school year.

Scientific Method: Variables

SpongeBob and his friends from Bikini Bottom were busy with a little research.
Read the description of each experiment and answer the questions.

Gary takes a bath Define

Control group

SpongeBob knows it's time for Gary the

snail to take a bath, but as usual, the snail
Independent (experimenter-specified) variable
doesn't want to take it.
SpongeBob suggests that he can lure Gary
into the bathtub by placing the snail's
favorite cookie next to it.
The first time, SpongeBob was just trying
Dependent (changing) variable
to get Gary to go to the bathroom, but he
refused.
The second time, SpongeBob put cookies
next to the bathtub. But Gary didn't move Conclusion
even for the cookie.

Favorite ice cream

Define

The doctor advises Squidward to cut

down on sweets to lower his heart rate. CONTROL
Squidward is not sure that giving up his
favorite ice cream will be so beneficial.
To test his idea that sugar doesn't
Independent (experimenter-specified)
lower your heart rate, he ate all his variable
favorite foods for a week and measured his
heart rate every day. His average heart
rate was 115 bpm (beats per minute).
In his next experiment, he spends a Dependent (changing) variable

week without eating sweet foods. This

week, his average heart rate was 95 bpm.

Conclusion
Free Lunch at the Krusty
Define
Krab

CONTROL
Mr. Krabs believes that giving his
employees a free lunch will increase
productivity at the Krusty Krab
restaurant. Independent (experimenter-specified) variable
To test the idea, he gives half the
employees a free Krabby Patty lunch
every day for a month.
Another group of employees are not
provided with lunch and must bring their Dependent (changing) variable
own.
At the end of the month, he
measures productivity by checking the
amount of work completed. Conclusion
The group that was given lunch
completed more work than those who
were not given lunch.

Spongebob's Clean Pants Define

CONTROL

SpongeBob noticed that his favorite

pants weren't as clean as they used to
be. His friend Sandy suggested that he Independent (experimenter-specified) variable
try using a new detergent called Clean-O
that she found at the store.
SpongeBob washed one pair of pants in
plain water and the other in water with
Clean-O detergent. Dependent (changing) variable
After washing both pairs of trousers
three times, it turned out that those washed
in Clean-O detergent were no cleaner than
those washed in Conclusion
plain water.
Scientific Method: Variables
For each experiment, determine the independent (experimenter-specified)
and dependent (changing) variables.

1. Define

Control group

A cow is given growth hormone and

then compared to another cow that
was not given growth hormone. Both Independent variable

cows were weighed at age 2

Mosquito repellent is sprayed on one

hand and not on the other hand.
The number of mosquito bites is Independent variable
counted after 2 hours.
