Why Earth is the Only Habitable Planet

Earth is the only known habitable planet due to its ideal distance from the Sun, suitable atmosphere composition, abundant water, diverse surface environments, and appropriate gravity. These features create conditions necessary for life, unlike Mars and Venus, which lack critical habitability elements. The document also includes an activity comparing Earth with Mars and Venus to explore their similarities and differences in terms of habitability.

Why is Earth the Only Known Habitable Planet?

Earth is unique in the solar system because it supports life. But why is this
so? Scientists have identified several key features that make our planet
habitable:

1. Distance from the Sun

Earth lies in the Goldilocks Zone, the area where it is not too hot,
not too cold. This perfect distance allows liquid water to exist, which is
essential for life.
2. Atmosphere Composition
Earth’s atmosphere contains the right mix of gases, especially
oxygen for animals and carbon dioxide for plants. It also protects us from
harmful solar radiation and helps regulate temperature.
3. Presence of Water
Earth has abundant water in liquid, solid, and vapor form. Water is
a universal solvent and crucial for transporting nutrients in all living
things.
4. Type of Surface
Earth has both land and water, with diverse environments. It has
forests, oceans, mountains, deserts. These allow a wide range of
organisms to thrive.
5. Gravity
Earth’s gravity is strong enough to hold the atmosphere in place
and allow humans to move, stand, and build. Too little gravity and we’d
float away; too much and we couldn’t function.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Research about the features of Earth, Mars, and Venus
2. Answer the following questions:
a. Which planet is most similar to Earth? Why?
b. Which habitability feature is missing or problematic in Mars and
Venus?
c. If you could change one thing about Mars or Venus to make it
habitable, what would it be?
3. Reflect:
a. Write a short paragraph (3-5 sentences) answering:
i. “After comparing the planets, I realize that Earth is
habitable because…”
