Water: We cannot imagine living without water even for a

day. Water is not a nutrient, but it is essential for all our body

Roughage: In addition to the above nutrients

roughage or dietary fibre is an essential part of
any healthy diet. Roughage forms the bulk of our
diet as we cannot digest it. It helps to remove undigested material
from our bodies. We get fibre or roughage from salads. Porridge
and semolina (sogji) also add bulk to our food.

An individual's dietary choices significantly influence their health, as food choices affect energy levels, disease risk, and overall wellness. To avoid pitfalls, one should emphasize a balanced diet, incorporating all nutrient groups in appropriate proportions, and avoid excessive intake of processed and junk foods. Understanding nutritional information and making conscious food selections can prevent lifestyle-related diseases and promote long-term health . Reducing intake of high-sugar and high-fat snacks is also crucial .

When comparing diets for balance and healthiness, one should assess the inclusion of all nutrient groups: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals, as well as water and roughage. Evaluate diversity in food choices, adequacy of nutrient intake, and the presence of junk or heavily processed foods. Assess whether the diet meets specific energy and health needs, considering individual lifestyle and nutritional requirements . A diet is considered balanced if it comprehensively meets these dietary guidelines .

A diet that includes a variety of foods is important because no single food item can fulfill all the body's needs. Different nutrients play distinct roles: carbohydrates and fats provide energy, proteins are crucial for growth and repair, vitamins and minerals support various bodily functions like building bones and teeth, and water is essential for all physiological processes . A balanced diet, therefore, ensures that all these nutrient groups—carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water—are consumed in the right amounts to maintain health and support bodily functions effectively .

Water and roughage are critical to a balanced diet despite not yielding energy. Water is indispensable for all body functions, helping in hydration and the physiological processes necessary for health. Roughage, or dietary fiber, aids in digestion by adding bulk to food. It prevents constipation and helps in the removal of waste by facilitating bowel movements. Both elements support overall health by ensuring efficient bodily functions and digestive health .

Healthy eating habits involve consuming fresh food, washing hands before meals, avoiding overeating, limiting junk food consumption, eating at regular intervals, and chewing food properly. Regular consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains helps fulfill the body's nutrient needs. These practices help maintain a balanced diet by ensuring nutrient diversity and proper food safety .

An individual's balanced diet must align with their unique needs and lifestyle. For example, children in their growing years require more carbohydrates and proteins to support body growth and energy needs. An athlete, however, might need a higher intake of carbohydrates to fuel intense physical activities. Adjusting nutrient intake to match activity level and developmental stage ensures the diet remains balanced and supportive of specific health and energy requirements .

While fats provide twice the energy as carbohydrates, overconsumption can lead to obesity and other health issues. Oily and fatty foods, such as those containing refined oil, butter, and ghee, can cause weight gain if consumed in excess due to their high caloric content. This can increase the risk of diseases associated with obesity like cardiovascular issues . Despite being an essential energy source, moderation is key to avoiding adverse health effects .

Proteins contribute to the body’s health by aiding growth, repairing wounds and injuries, building muscles, and bolstering the immune system to fight off infections. Rich sources of protein include milk and milk products, pulses, beans, peas, meat, fish, soya beans, and eggs . Proteins also provide a sense of fullness that lasts longer due to slower digestion .

Junk foods are often unhealthy because they contain high levels of sugars and fats with little protein, vitamins, or minerals, offering 'empty calories.' Regular consumption can lead to obesity and related health issues, such as diabetes and heart disease, due to their poor nutritional profile and contribution to excessive caloric intake without essential nutrients . Their habitual consumption can significantly impact long-term health negatively .

Vitamins and minerals are essential for maintaining health by supporting bodily functions. Vitamins prevent illnesses and assist the body in functioning properly. Minerals are necessary for building teeth, bones, and blood composition. Dietary sources of vitamins include fruits, vegetables, milk, and meat, while minerals can be obtained from whole grains, green leafy vegetables, eggs, and meat . Consuming a varied diet ensures an adequate intake of these micronutrients .
