Warm-up and Objective Discussion
Warm-up (2-3 mins)
● Have a spider diagram on the board before class.
● Tell Ss that the class is going to brainstorm different ideas about someone’s hero.
● Elicit 1 hero from class and write name on the center circle of diagram.
● Class brainstorms actions/characteristics of that hero. Add ideas to diagram.
Objective Discussion (1 min)
● Tell Ss what they will be doing in the lesson today (listening to people talk about heroes,
summarizing (talking about the most important ideas of) the listening)
Pre-teach Vocabulary (5-6 mins)
● Tell Ss they will match the definitions to the words (4-5 words) on handout and then check
with each other.
● Ss match and check with pairs.
● Elicit words from students and go over meaning, pronunciation, and form.
Instruct and Model

1st Listening (5-6 mins)
● Tell Ss they will now watch a video, Great Achievers on childhood heroes. Make sure to elicit
the meaning of childhood.
● Tell Ss there will be 4 speakers and they need to match each speaker (Speakers 1-4) with their
childhood hero on the handout.
● Ss listen and match.
● Ss compare.
● Check answers with class.
2nd Listening (6-10 mins)
● Tell Ss they are going to listen again and answer the comprehension questions on the handout.
Have them read the questions first.
● Ss listen again and complete the activity.
● Ss check answers in pairs.
● Monitor and, if necessary, do a 3rd listening.
● Check answers with class.
Guided Practice

Guided Summarizing of Listening (10-12 mins)
● Divide Ss into groups of 4.
● Tell Ss they will use the spider diagram to present the actions/characteristics of the childhood
hero assigned to them to other group members.
● Model using spider diagram created at the beginning of class.
● Assign each group member one of the speakers.
● Give each group member a different spider diagram with the actions/characteristics of one of
the speaker’s hero from the listening.
● Give students a minute to prepare.
● Have each group member present their assigned hero to the group. Tell group members to
listen and see if anything important was missing.
● Monitor.
● Conduct class feedback based on monitoring (for example, focus on error correction or
pronunciation).
Independent Practice

Presenting Childhood Hero (12-15 mins)
● Tell Ss they are now going to present on their own childhood hero. They will first use a spider
diagram to write down actions/characteristics of their hero. Remind them of the spider diagram
on the board and what they did at the beginning of class.
● Give Ss a blank spider diagram or ask them to draw a spider diagram on a piece of paper.
● Ss create spider diagram of hero.
● Tell Ss they are now going to walk around the class and present their childhood hero to each
other. Explain that they will also listen to each other and fill in information on a chart about 3
or 4 of their classmates’ hero. Hand out chart.
● Model what Ss have to do, either with the spider diagram on the board or with own spider
diagram of hero.
● Ss mingle.
● Monitor.
Assessment

Assessing Independent Practice (5-7 mins)
● After mingling activity, have different students share 1 or 2 things they learned about another
student’s hero.
● Collect charts from students.
● Conduct class feedback based on monitoring of Independent Practice (for example, error
correction).
