Diesel Power Generation Overview

A diesel power station generates electrical energy using a diesel engine as the prime mover, which converts combustion products into mechanical energy to drive a generator. These plants serve as standby power sources for critical facilities and consist of various auxiliary systems including fuel supply, air intake, cooling, and lubrication systems. While they have advantages such as quick start-up and simple design, they also face challenges like high maintenance costs and environmental concerns.

Diesel power

generation 1

A GENERATING STATION IN WHICH DIESEL ENGINE IS USED AS THE PRIME

MOVER FOR THE GENERATION OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY IS KNOW AS DIESEL
POWER STATION OR DIESEL POWER PLANT. THE DIESEL BURNS INSIDE THE
ENGINE AND THE PRODUCTS OR THIS COMBUSTION ACTS AS THE
WORKING FLUID TO PROVIDE MECHANICAL ENERGY .THE DIESEL ENGINE
DRIVES THE GENERATOR WHICH CONVERTS MECHANICAL ENERGY INTO
ELECTRICAL ENERGY.

Uses of diesel power

THESE PLANTS ARE USED AS STANDBY SETS FOR CONTINUITY OF SUPPLY TO IMPORTANT
POINTS SUCH AS HOSPITALS, RADIO STATIONS , CINEMA HOUSES , TELEPHONE
EXCHANGES ETC.

THE PLANT HAS THE FOLLOWING AUXILIARIES

›FUEL SUPPLY SYSTEM
›AIR INTAKE SYSTEM
›EXHAUST SYSTEM
› COOLING SYSTEM
›LUBRICATING SYSTEM
› ENGINE STARTING SYSTEM
›ALTERNATOR
3
Air intake system
›THE REQUIRED FOR THE COMBUSTION OF FUEL INSIDE THE DIESEL ENGINE CYLINDER IS DRAWN THROUGH THE
AIR FILTER.
›THE PURPOSE OF THE FILTER IS TO REMOVE DUST FROM THE INCOMING AIR (ATMOSPHERE.)
Fuel supply system
4
›Fuel from the storage tank is pumped through a filter into a smaller tank called all day tank, this tank supplies the daily
requirement of the diesel engine.
Exhaust system 5
›THE EXHAUST GASES COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE IS VERY NOISY, IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE NOISE A SILENCER IS USED.
6
Cooling system

›THE TEMPERATURE OF THE BURNING FUEL INSIDE THE ENGINE CYLINDER 1500C TO
2000 DEGREE CENTIGRADE .IN ORDER TO LOWER THIS TEMPERATURE WATER IS
CIRCULATED AROUND THE ENGINE .
›THE HOT WATER LEAVING THE JACKET IS PASSED THROUGH THE HEAT EXCHANGER.
Lubricating system 7
›This circuit include lubricating oil tank ,oil pump and oil cooler .
›The purpose of the lubrication system is to reduce the wear of the engine moving parts, such as piston ,shaft, valves must be
lubricated.
›Lubrication also help to cool the engine,
8
Engine starting system
›DIESEL ENGINE USED IN DIESEL POWER PLANT IS NOT SELF STARTING.
›THE STARTING SYSTEM INCLUDES BATTERY , STARTER MOTOR ,SOLENOID, IGNITION SWITCH , STARTER RELAY.
›WHEN THE IGNITION KEY IS TURNED TO THE START POSITION , CURRENT FLOWS AND ENERGIZES THE STARTER SOLENOID COIL. THE
ENERGIZED COIL BECOMES AN ELECTROMAGNET WHICH PULLS THE PLUNGER INTO THE COIL .THE PLUNGER CLOSES A SET OF
CONTACT WHICH ALLOW HIGH CURRENT TO REACH THE STARTER MOTOR .
Generator (Alternator) 9
›Generator is an electrical machine which transfer mechanical energy or magnetic energy into electrical energy.
›It includes the various parts like rotor, stator, reak bracket ,rectifier etc.
Advantage of diesel power plant 10

• Very simple design also simple installation and occupies less space .
•Limited cooling water requirement.
•Quickly started and put on load.
•It can respond to varying loads without and difficulties.
•Small storage is needed for the fuel.
•Layout of power plant is quite simple.
•There is no problem of ash handling .
•Less supervision is required.
