PARTS OF A SYSTEM UNIT
To identify and describe the key
components of a system unit
OBJECTIVE
PARTS OF A SYSTEM UNIT
INTRODUCTION
There are three major components of computer system: the
software, peopleware and hardware. If you want to be
skillful in operating a computer, you need to memorize the
parts of a system unit and be familiar with their roles in your
computer.

WHAT IS A SYSTEM UNIT?
A system unit is the main box-like structure of a computer
with all the essential components needed for the computer
to work. Inside the system unit, you'll find the brain of the
computer called the CPU (or central processing unit), the
main circuit board (known as the motherboard), the RAM
(random access memory) and other computer hardware.

1. MOTHERBOARD (MOBO)
Also called the system board or main board. It is the main
circuit board of a microcomputer. It holds and allows
communication between many of the crucial electronic
components of a system, such as the central processing
unit (CPU) and memory, and provides connectors for
other peripherals.

2. CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT (CPU)
Is the brain of the computer and one of the most important
chip in the computer. The CPU is inserted directly into a CPU
socket on the motherboard.

3. HARD DISK DRIVE (HDD) OR
SOLID STATE DRIVE (SSD)
These are non-volatile storage devices where applications
are stored. Its main function is to store data permanently.

4. RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY (RAM)
Is a volatile memory that stores data temporarily in a
computer.

5. VIDEO CARD
Is used to process images so they can be displayed on your
monitor. A good video card can make a big difference in the
quality of your graphics, so this is particularly important if
you play games or work with photography and video
editing.

6. SOUND CARD
Is an internal expansion card that provides input and
output of audio signals to and from a computer
under the control of computer programs.

7. CPU COOLER
Also known as Heat Sink Fan (HSF) is a device that is
attached to a processor chip to keep it from overheating by
absorbing its heat and dissipating it into the air. Generally, a
processor's temperature should not run more than 50-55
degrees Celsius while under a full load.

8. POWER SUPPLY UNIT (PSU)
Is an electronic device used to supply the components in a
computer with power. PSU main function is to converting
potentially lethal 110-115 or 220-230 volt alternating current
(AC) into a steady low-voltage direct current (DC) usable by
the computer.
