Children are expected to spend a lot of time studying both in and after school and have little time to
relax. Is this a positive or negative social trend?

It is a common belief that students are required to dedicate a large amount of time to their studies during
school hours and afterwards, leaving little time for relaxation. While this trend seems to bring pupils
many negative aspects, it also create some benefits in terms of academic performance and personal
growth.

On the one hand, spending lots of time on their studies would create a plethora of positive aspects. Firstly,
studying beyond school hours helps students to broaden what they have learned during the day. By
dedicating time to completing assignments, and doing projects, students can achieve a deeper
understanding of the subjects they are studying. Moreover, spending time on their studies after school
enhances self-discipline as students are obliged to work independently. Unlike learning in class, teachers
guide students through the documents and studying after school requires students to manage their own
learning process, encouraging them to become more self-reliant, as they must set their own study
schedules. Lastly, students who consistently study both in and after school often boost self-confidence.
Since they accumulate knowledge and skills, they feel more prepared for exams, projects, and other
academic challenges, improving their academic performance and motivating them to continue striving for
excellence.

On the other hand, there are some obvious drawbacks that would arise. One of the most prominent
negative effects of constant studying both in and after school is affecting students’ mental health. The
pressure to perform well academically can lead to stress, anxiety, and even depression. According to the
study, it is reported that academic pressure is one of the primary sources of stress for students.
Futhermore, when students are expected to study constantly, they have little time to relax, which limits
their ability to unwind and recharge. Moreover, studying throughout the day and night often leads to lack
of sleep. Spending long hours on homework or attending after-school classes, students do not have
enough time to sleep, affecting cognitive functioning, memory, and concentration. Especially, studying
during school hours and afterwards may reduce face-to-face interactions. Children have less time for
extracurricular activities, hobbies, and spending time with friends and family as they are busy with
schoolwork and projects.

In conclusion, while focusing much on studying both at school and afterwards seems to have a lot of
disadvantages, it also brings children significant benefits. By dedicating an appropriate amount of time to
learning while ensuring adequate rest, we can enhance both academic performance and over well-being.
