Vertical Housing Solutions for Addis Ababa

The document outlines a design project process focused on addressing three major problems in Addis Ababa: student housing shortages, agro-industrial inefficiencies, and overcrowded hospitals. Proposed solutions include a vertical dormitory tower, a multi-program agro-industrial complex, and a high-rise specialized hospital, each incorporating sustainable practices. The final choice emphasizes vertical student housing due to its land efficiency and strong social and political support.

Design Project Process Outline (Addis Ababa Focus)

Problem 1: Vertical Student Housing – Addis Ababa University, Sidist Kilo

The campus faces a severe shortage of student accommodation. Existing low-rise
dormitories are overcrowded, inefficient in land use, and lack adequate communal study
and social spaces. A vertical housing typology is required to optimize campus land and
provide a modern living-learning environment.

Proposed Solution
A 12–15 story modular dormitory tower with flexible unit layouts, shared
kitchens/bathrooms, and vertically integrated communal spaces. A rooftop garden will
serve as a recreational zone. Sustainable strategies include solar panels, passive ventilation,
and rainwater harvesting.

Problem 2: Agro-Industrial Complex – Akaki-Kality

Addis Ababa suffers high post-harvest losses due to limited processing and storage facilities.
The city lacks integrated agro-industrial infrastructure to consolidate production, storage,
and distribution. Akaki-Kality is strategically positioned with industrial zoning and
transport links.

Proposed Solution
A multi-program complex with flour mills, dairy units, vegetable packing centers, cold
storage, and warehouses. Supportive infrastructure includes quality-control labs and
training centers. Renewable energy (solar, biogas) and water management systems will
reduce environmental impact.

Problem 3: High-Rise Specialized Hospital – Bole/Gullele

Existing hospitals are overcrowded, fragmented, and inefficient, with demand for
specialized care far exceeding capacity. A high-rise healthcare facility is necessary to
consolidate services and streamline circulation.

Proposed Solution
A 20-story hospital tower with programmatic zoning: emergency/outpatient at the base,
surgical and ICU functions in mid-levels, and wards/administration in upper levels. The
design emphasizes vertical circulation efficiency and incorporates sustainable systems.

Evaluation Summary
- Economic: High for student housing (land efficiency), medium for agro-industrial (capital
intensive), high for hospital (strong funding potential).
- Social Impact: All high (students, food security, healthcare).
- Environmental: Medium–High (depending on green systems).
- Political Feasibility: Strong for housing and healthcare.
Final Choice
Vertical Student Housing – Sidist Kilo. It maximizes land use, directly supports educational
goals, and has strong social and political backing.
