right to life, liberty, and security ,Freedom of thought, expression, and religion The right to work and
education The right to equality before the law. These rights ensure the mainatnence of basic
happiness within the society that ensures harmony and equality. But if we take a pause right now
and focus on the current scenario the globe can we admit that we are adhering to the above
description of human rights. Violation ofn Human Rights has drastically taken over the whole globe,
right from the gaza strip where thousands of innocent people are getting killed regularly, the ones
who survive are forced to live in a hectic conditions without the basic necessities of life, what about
their right to life? What about the rights of the lost lives in the Russia Ukraine war, a prolonged war
for 3 years and still continiuing, a very recent incident in our very own city of joy, the sexual assault
and murder of a 31 year old doctor, indeed a very tragic incident but more importantly a malicious
one, the resistance to file fir or the covering up the incident as a suicide or the delay of justice these
too are violation of human rights . a more shocking incident in afgahnistan where the talibanis
banned the voo=ices of women in public because they are intimate and shouldn’t be heard by men,
we should be thanful that our politicians are not talibani, they had already banned the faces of
women in public and now voices too, this happening in the world where were seeing the emergence

welcome back, our country Bharat has significant and historical experience of violation of rights and
freedom, our ancestors have successfully overcome the tyrrany of the Abrahamic and the White-
European colonizers. Especially under the white colonisers our ancestors had faced the most
tyranny, deprived of a humane life, forced to starve and serve the British at their own cost, the
Bengal famine the prime example, just to say the life expectancy during the brithsih colonisation was
32 years. However every fight for independence was also a fight for Human rights, the mass protests
of the Non Cooperation Movement and Quit India whre the poor peasnats protested, the protests of
the cpim whre working class engaged, the protest by the naval sailors in the Royal Indian Navy
mutiny, these movements were not only the fight to live freely in our country but fight for Human
rights as well. But the Human rights movement in India emerged a bit later..

we will be right back after a short advertisement break.

Welcome back, the earliest examples of Human Rights movement are the Chipko movement, the
Narmada Bachao Andolan and the silent valley movement, these movements have both the aspects
of environmrntalism and protection of Human rights as well, the people participating in these
movements were either peasants, marginalized groups or lived in the rural and any alteration with
the nature would’ve affected their habitat, economy and daily lives. The Chipko movement that
protected the tress from deforestation by the excellent method of hugging them, the narmada
bachao andolan and the silent valley movement both for the protection of nature and the habitat of
marginalized societies and the peasants. However, Human rights movement in India got its
germination during the Emergency Rule during 1975–1977 and developed during the post
Emergency period. Two major trends were marked by Civil liberties concerns and the rights based
perspectives. Rude shock received from the imposition of the national emergency in India in 1976
made the articulate and vocal sections of society sensitised to human rights. Absence of democratic
rights during those eighteen months galvanised students, intellectuals, political activists, trade
unionists, artists into action. The educated middle class of India had thrived on an uninterrupted flow
of democracy in its national life since it gained independence in 1947. The emergency rule was
marked by detention without trial for a large number of people—students, youth, political
personalities—news censorship, trespassing without legal sanction of private premises, taping of
telephones, interception of letters and constitutional amendment curtailing basic rights to life and
freedom in the name of national security and violation of civil liberties. Television being monopoly of
the govern- ment was totally controlled by the ruling party. Hundreds of thousands of people joined
massive rallies to protest against the anti-democratic acts of the government and to mobilise public
opinion to safe- guard the Indian democracy. Organisations such as Citizens for Democracy, People’s
Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL). Organisations such as Citizens for Democracy, People’s Union for Civil
Liberties (PUCL), People’s Union for Civil Liberties and Democratic Rights (PUCLDR) and Chhatra Yuva
Sangharsh Vahini were at the forefront of human rights struggles at the national level. Finally, the
21st century is seeing significant evolvement of Human Rights and so for its violation Manipur a
primary example, one thing that ill note again is that politics has huge impact in the realm of Human
rights and we must not forget that government in Bharat is by the will of the people and most
importantly for the welfare of people. That is all for today, Stay tuned Akahvani Kolkata.
