Process Questions

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using (a) broad and inclusive
definitions and (b) narrow and exclusive definitions of globalization?

 Broad and Inclusive:

Advantage: It captures the globalization’s dimensions like the economy, politics, and culture. It
is open for all, meaning that all people can be a part of it or have knowledge of.
Disadvantage: It may be too vague, since it consists a wide range.
 Narrow and Exclusive:
Advantage: It is clear and easy to study with its small poupulation size since it is exclusive.
Disadvantage: It misses the important aspects of globalization, which is connecting the world.

2. What do you think is the importance of defining globalization?

The importance of globalization is it helps us understand different perspectives,
knowing the impact of a cretain thing on the society, and we can easily compare the
positive and negative effects of it.

3. Do you agree with the idea that the contemporary world is by high liquidity? Why or
why not?
For me yes, because people, information, and goods move faster and is more easily
delivered. Like, viral videos, stock market, and migration.

Process Questions
1. Are societies in the world becoming more similar (homogenous) or more different
(heterogeneous)?

For me, I think both are happening at the same time. Like in homogenous, people share
culture with food, media, and fashion. And as for heterogenous, the locals adapt and mix like
filipino communities who now live in abroad, and how Chinese business’ are all over in the
Philippines.

2. What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of homogenization of culture?
How about heterogenization?

First with homogenization, we can now communicate easily and have global unity, but
the down side is that local traditions and identity are lost. As for geterogenization, there is
cultural diversity and the preservation of locals. But this may cause conflicts or
misunderstandings to other people.

3. Which of the aforementioned views on the history of globalization you find most
appealing? Why?
For me I like Epoch view (Therborn, 2000; Ritzer, 2015): Because it shows globalization
as waves or stages (religion, colonization, imperialism, post-WWII, Cold War, etc.), helping us
see how it evolved step by step.

Process Questions
1. What do you think is the effect of a high dependency ratio in developed countries? In
developing countries?

In developed countries, with the aging population there are fewer workers and higher
costs for caretakers. As for developing countries there are more youth, so there is a shortage on
who gets free education and there is a hard time finding a job.

2. Is the heightened flow of people a unique feature of the current global era?

No, it has always existed years ago. Like the colonization of the Japanese, Americans,
and Spanish’s in the Philippines. Even in other countries like the World War I and World War II.
But today, because of technology flows are faster and larger.

3. Has globalization facilitated or obstructed greater labor migration?

With globalization many have labored abroad, it facilitated by creating more job
opportunities to the people and easier access to information because of technology. But bear in
mind that many countries still have strict immigration rules.
