Reading Skills

“Reading is the activity or skill of understanding written words.”


According to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English

Reading involves two activities, one of seeing words before


our eyes and the other understanding their meanings.
Reading styles depend on your purpose and nature of the
reading material.

Reading Styles

Slow Style
Also called the study reading Reading Styles
style.
This reading style that is slow
and used for the careful reading Slow Normal Rapid
of important material.
Normal Style
It means to read everything Skimming
without leaving out any words
This reading style takes time
and is used for important Surveying Scanning
material

Reading Styles

Rapid Style
Skimming is a type of reading, where the reader is supposed
to read quickly taking minimum stops.
The reader should only focus on the main idea and connected
details of the text and should not attempt to look into all the
details.
1 Surveying is the process of reading a book, long article, or
report
2 Scanning is used to get specific information in the written
content. For example
“He scanned the book for that figure”
“She scanned the report for that table”
“We scanned through the result sheet looking for our names.”

SQ3R technique

The SQ3R method was put together by Francis Robinson in 1970


as an active and effective method of reading.

It is one of the methods best known for reading faster


SQ3R stands for the steps in reading: survey ‫مسح عام‬,
question, read, recite ‫سرد‬, review ‫مراجعة‬.

SQ3R technique

Before reading, survey the material. Look through the

main and the sub-headings and try to get an overview.

Ask yourself what this chapter is about: What is the
