Raja Rammohan Roy was the 'morning star' of Indian renaissance. He was born on May 10,
1774 at Radhanagar, Hooghly. Ramakanta Roy and Tarini Devi were his parents. Rammohan
had great passion for knowledge. He went to Patna to learn Arabic, Persian and Sanskrit. He
also learnt English, Latin, Greek, French and Tibetan very well. He visited Tibet to know more
about Buddhism. Pleased with his work, the last Mughal Emperor conferred on hitn the title
'Raja'.·Raja Rammohari Roy was a great social and religious reformer. He fought relentlessly
against injustice, prejudices and superstitions. In 1828 he abolished the cruel custom of 'Sati'
with the support of Lord Bentinck. He shocked the entire orthodox Hindu Society. For reforming
Hinduism he founded Brahmo Samaj in 1829. He edited the upanishads and wrote books on
various subjects. In 1931 he went to England to present india's case in the British Parliament.
This great man breathed his last in Bristol on September 27, 1833 and was buried there.

A brilliant student, Subhas Chandra passed B.A examinat ion from Scottish Church College. He
became an I.C.S. officer but refused to serve the British R~ . He joined the freedom moveme nt
under the leadershi p of Deshban dhu [Link]. A popular l'¥ader, Subhas Chandra was elected
the Mayor of Calcutta Corporat ion. He became the Presid~nt of the Indian National Congress,

tvJice. He had to spend most of his days in prison. He wa~ a threat to the British Governm ent.
During the Second World War he secretly left India and wej t to Germany and Japan. He formed
the Azad Hind Fauz. Fighting against the British he came -µ p to Kohima and hoisted the Indian
National Flag. But he could not see India ach1eving freedom. In 1945 he was reported to have
died in a plane crash. But it is still shrouded in mystery. As an inspiring force he will always live
in the hearts of millions of Indians.

PolJutio n is one of our great problems. We are trying to fight it. We know, polythene bags
are causing ha rn1 to our e nvironment. The Pollution Control Board has already imposed a
ban on polythe ne bags. Yet these are widely used. Paper and jute bags are rarely seen.
People a re using poly bags forgetting the hazards these are creating. We know, polythene
cannot be destroyed. Only fire can burn it . But the smoke is very harmful to our health. The
thrown away polythene pouches clog the drains. If buried, they prevent the growth of plants.
They are user-friendly but not at all eco-friendly.
The authorities should organize awareness campaigns. People will willingly obey the ban .

A mercha nt had an ass to carry his goods. One day he loaded it with a sack of saJt arnd set off

F1RE BREAKS OuT IN SwM

Kolkata. M ay 20 - About 20 shanties were gutted in a fire that broke out in a slum at
Ahiritala this evening. Ten fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames. Fire-
fighters took almost 2 hours to extinguish the fire.
The fire, it is learnt, broke out after a cooking gas cylinder exploded in one of the shanties.
Local people initiated the work of extinguishing the fire. It is reported, the fire had spread to all
the 20 &hanties before the fire-fighters managed to reach the spot. "Heavy rainfall was a ble~-
mg as it helped us to douse the flames", said a fire-fighter.
The residents failed to save their valuables. However, there is no report of casualty frorr.

Kolkata, 24 June - Three persons , including a woma n, were killed after being struck by
lightning at Amta , Howrah on Wednes day last.
When lightning struck him , Sujit Pal (18), a first-yea r coJlege student was bathing in a pond
near his house at Joypur in Amta. He died on the spot.
In another incident, Naresh Bangal (45) and his wife, Jhunu Bangal (39) were kilJed by
lightning at Alipukur of Uluberia. They had gone to the fields to gather cattle when sudden ly
they got electrocuted. Groanin g in pain, Naresh and his wife were rushed to Uluberi a State
Genera l Hospital where they collapsed. "The bodies of the couple turned pitch black with se-
vere bums," said a neighbo ur of the victim .

The publication of a school magazine involves a series of activities. At first, a Magazi ne
Committee is formed. Next, an editor is selected . Thereafter, a notice is served inviting writings
from students and teachers. Various types of writings are collected within a specific date . These
are now sorted. The selected writings are edited with necessary additions and alterations . In the
next stage, a rough draft with the contents and layouts is prepared. This rough draft is then sent
to the printer. On receiving the proof-copies, a careful correction of the proofs is done. After that
corrected copies are sent to the printer for the final print. The matters are now printed in a book
form and bound. The magazine is finally published and distributed among students.

It's a pleasure to announce that the club is going to observe the 'Youth Day' on 12th ,
January, 2016 by organizing a blood donation camp. It will be held on the club premises from
11 a . m. to 3 p. m. We all know, there's an acute shortage of blood on hospitals and blood
banks. Blood can be procured only by donating blood. The sensible people of the locality are,
therefore, requested to donate blood. Their blood can save some patients in critical condition.
The camp will be conducted by Dr. S. N. Monda!, a eminent physician of the locality.
Every donor will be provided with a donor card for future use.
