Exercise 13: Aside from humour, can you cite at least three more cultural universals? Give three
examples and explain how these cultures can transcend societal boundaries.

1) Greetings
 We greet one another in every country on earth, but in a variety of ways. The
“Konnichiwa” of Japan, the “Mabuhay” of the Philippines, the “Namaste” of the Indians,
etc. The world extends greetings to one another, but in a variety of styles and with
varying degrees of respect for each greeting.
2) Language
 We still speak our own unique languages and dialects, despite the fact that English is an
international language and a common teaching medium. Indigenous peoples have their
own distinct dialects, and even the deaf have their own system of sign language. So,
even though everyone of us speaks a unique language, language is still used to
communicate by everyone on the planet.
3) Arts
 Although art is well-known throughout the world, everyone of us has our own genre or
perspective on it. We have brutality, romanticism, abstract, etc. But every nation has its
own own form of art. Like Japanese calligraphy, Chinese bonzai trees and porcelain,
Philippine tribal tattoos, etc.
