INTRODUCTION
1.0 Background to the Study
Water is essential to livestock, and its impacts on their growth rate depend on the type of Water
provided by farmers. Water serves as a means of transporting nutrients and regulating body
temperature (Sohal et al., 2002). Its molecule consists of atoms of oxygen and hydrogen
covalently bonded by hydrogen bonds (Wasf, 1996). It is a chemical substance with the chemical
formula H2O and is abundant in living systems, occupying 70% or more of the weight of
organisms. Enno, et al. (2009).
Over the years, technological innovation has identified the Magnetized Unit as a significant
engineering advancement in the agricultural sector, prompting agricultural engineers to develop
methods for generating Magnetized Treated Water. Water acquires magnetic properties through a
permanent contact with a magnet, producing disintegrated energy and increasing the atomic
component of the Water. A magnetic field is the number of lines in a definite area of space
where energy appears and is affected on an electric charge. The magnetic field lines are close
lines that stem from the northern poles towards the southern pole (Simpson, 1980).
The process exposes Water to a magnetized field that reconfigures the clusters and physical
structure of Water's salt content (Lingdinger, 2021; El Sabry et al., 2018). According to
Reminick (2003), studies on magnetically treated Water have revealed that it contains 47 types
of minerals that are not found in other types of Water. For an extended time (Lan, 2001). As
specified in Fleming's left-hand rule, the operations are to be channeled through the magnetized
field in a pipe, and "the flow of water must cut the magnetic field at the right angle" (Yusuf et al.,
2022).
Magnetized Water readdresses the essential properties of Water that have been altered through
sterilization processes and environmental pollution. It changes and enhances water conductivity,
ionization, and electrical charges, and reduces acidity, Ali Abdulwahab, 2023. Magnetized Water
is produced through the magnetized unit, connected via a pipe for piglets' consumption, to
evaluate fluid intake, absorption, and growth rate. The Magnetized Unit includes a calibration
tank, a Neodymium magnet (10x25x50mm) that produces an adequate magnetic field to form a
magnetic pipe, a transparent plexi glass pipe, a wooden stand (made from a healthy plank),
nipples, and a control switch.
In contemporary animal husbandry, enhancing the development and health of livestock is
important for improving productivity. Water, one of the significant enhancements of economic
value in animal rearing, is highly valued by farmers as an indispensable element in cleaning and
consumption. Water benefits human and animal health by preventing environmental pollution
and contamination. In a Piggery, the importance of Water cannot be overstated; every pig
consumes Water based on its stage and weight.
Water is crucial in pig farming, as it facilitates feed intake, growth, meat quality, and
temperature regulation. The total well-being of pigs depends on the quality of Water used to
transport nutrients and remove waste. Piglets (Weaners) are exposed to breast milk and Water,
and fully resume drinking Water and eating solid food, such as PKC, Brewery Dry Waste
(BDG), Cassava Peels, mixed with other ingredients, after six weeks. Pig farmers provide
untreated Water and use simple watering systems and drinkers for pigs, such as buckets with
bricks, broad flat buckets, and metal water feeders (Nipples). Although the mentioned watering
systems serve as a temporary means of watering and are economical, they could make piglets/
pigs vulnerable to diseases and increase the risk of piglets falling or drowning.
1.1 Statement of the Problem
Previous studies on the application of Magnetized Water in livestock have focused on its effects
on broilers, chickens, fruits, rabbits, and its applications in laboratory uses. Pig farming is often
associated with scavenging and the provision of contaminated Water to animals, as well as the
rearing of animals in unsanitary conditions. These result in several outbreaks, low feed
consumption, and poor growth rates. Hence, this Study focuses on the configuration of the
magnetic-treated unit, as facilitated by earlier researchers, to generate Magnetized Water for
selected piglets, presenting a novel difficulty that was uncovered throughout this Study.
Therefore, the Study employed a circulatory flow approach to produce magnetized Water. The
process aims to develop a mechanism for purifying Water and testing the effectiveness of clean
Water on piglets against the norm of dirtiness to determine their nutritional absorption and meat
quality.
1.2 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The Study aims to fabricate a Magnetic Unit for dispensing magnetically treated Water, utilizing
a neodymium magnet to determine the physicochemical properties of Water and assess the
molecular structure of Water using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).
Its objectives are:
(i) To assess the impact of MTW on the average weekly (AWG) weight of piglets;
(ii) To determine the effect of MTW on the feed conversion ratio (FCR) of piglets;
(iii) To analyze water and feed intake patterns in piglets consuming MTW versus untreated
Water;
(iv) To evaluate any physiological or health changes associated with MTW consumption in
piglets.
1.3 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The Study focuses on the effect of MTW on weaned piglets over an 8-week period. It was
conducted at the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering of Kwara State
University, Malete, Ilorin, Kwara State, on the following coordinates: Latitude: 8.96689610 and
Longitude: 4.38740510 E.
Eight piglets were exposed to an ANOVA test: Four piglets (Group 1) drank MTW, and another
four piglets (Group 2) drank shallow Water for a set period of six weeks. Parameters were used
to determine the statistically significant difference between the two groups of piglets. The Study
was carried out in a controlled environment and under management conditions to ensure data
reliability.
1.4 Justification of the Project
Pig farming is a viable business worldwide, driven by the levels of national and international
consumption. The supply of unclean Water remains one of the challenges that have not been
solved, as the financial implication of purchasing clean Water for mixing feed and drinking
would be an extra burden on farmers. The Study enhanced the purification of shallow Water to
reduce the financial burden on farmers, prevent diseases and improve growth performance in
piglets, and promote economic stability in swine production.
