Course Description :
Review of Calculus and Analytical Geometry, Functions of several variables, domain and range of
several variables, Level curves, level surfaces and graphs, interior and boundary points of a region,
limits and properties of limits, tests for the non-existence of a limit, continuity in plane and space,
Introduction to partial derivatives and their application, higher order derivatives including Laplace
equation, wave equation, Cauchy Euler equations, Chain rule and application of chain rule, implicit
differentiation, directional derivatives and geometrical interpretation of directional derivatives,
gradients, equations of tangent planes and normal lines, extreme values and saddle points, first and
second derivative test for local extreme values, Lagrange’s multipliers, Taylor’s formula, double
Integral and properties of double integrals, finding limits of integration, Areas, average value,
Moments and Centers of Mass, centroids of geometric figures, Triple integrals and properties of
triple integrals, masses and moment in three dimensions, volume of region in space, Line integral
and fundamental theorem, mass and moment calculations, vector fields, work, circulation, flux,
path independence, Potential functions and conversion fields, exact differential form, Green’s
theorem in the plane, Surface area and surface integrals, Parameterized surfaces.
Course Objective:
The main focus of the course is to teach the students the necessary reasoning and technical skills to
become proficient in the application of the tools and concepts of multivariable calculus to model
situations in order to solve problems.
Teaching Methodology:
Lectures, Assignments, etc. Major component of the course should be covered using conventional
lectures.
