“MATHEMATICS IS NOT ABOUT NUMBERS, EQUATIONS, COMPUTATIONS, OR ALGORITHMS:
IT IS ABOUT UNDERSTANDING.”
— WILLIAM PAUL THURSTON
ITEM ONE: Data Analysis
The frequency table shows daily internet usage (in MB) for 60 students.
a) Modal Class and Estimated Mode
Modal class is the class with the highest frequency:
Class 200–299 has the highest frequency (15).
Using the formula for mode:
Mode = L + [(f1 - f0) / (2f1 - f0 - f2)] × h
L = 200, f1 = 15, f0 = 9, f2 = 12, h = 100
Mode = 200 + [(15 - 9)/(2×15 - 9 - 12)] × 100 = 200 + (6/9)×100 = 266.67 MB
b) Estimated Mean and Standard Deviation
Step 1: Find midpoints (x) of each class and calculate fx and fx².
| Class | f | x | fx | fx² |
|-----------|----|------|--------|------------|
| 0–99 | 6 | 49.5 | 297 | 14,700.75 |
| 100–199 | 9 |149.5 | 1345.5 | 201,532.25 |
| 200–299 | 15 |249.5 | 3742.5 | 933,806.25 |
| 300–399 | 12 |349.5 | 4194 |1,465,263 |
| 400–499 | 8 |449.5 | 3596 |1,617,202 |
| 500–599 | 7 |549.5 | 3846.5 |2,113,347.25|
| 600–699 | 3 |649.5 | 1948.5 |1,264,527.25|
Sum of fx = 18,970, Sum of fx² = 7,610,378.75, n = 60
Mean = ∑fx / n = 18,970 / 60 = 316.17 MB
SD = sqrt((∑fx² / n) - (mean)²) = sqrt(126,839.65 - 99,900.25) = sqrt(26,939.4) = 164.12
MB
c) Ogive Curve and Decision
Cumulative Frequency Table:
| Upper Bound | CF |
|-------------|-----|
| 99 |6 |
| 199 | 15 |
| 299 | 30 |
| 399 | 42 |
| 499 | 50 |
| 599 | 57 |
| 699 | 60 |
Interpolating to estimate number ≤ 270.5MB:
270.5 in 200–299 class:
CF = 15 + [(270.5–199.5)/100]×15 = 15 + 10.65 = 25.65
Students > 270.5MB = 60 - 25.65 = 34.35 ⇒ Percentage = 34.35/60 × 100 = 57.25%
Conclusion: 57.25% < 60%, so principal will NOT stop loading data.
ITEM TWO: Matrices and Costing
a) Quantity matrix Q (rows: suppliers, columns: items):
[[25, 20, 60], [15, 25, 55], [30, 30, 50]]
b) Price matrix P (column vector):
[[10,000], [2,000], [25,000]]
Cost calculations via matrix multiplication:
A: 25×10,000 + 20×2,000 + 60×25,000 = 250,000 + 40,000 + 1,500,000 = UGX 1,790,000
B: 15×10,000 + 25×2,000 + 55×25,000 = 150,000 + 50,000 + 1,375,000 = UGX 1,575,000
C: 30×10,000 + 30×2,000 + 50×25,000 = 300,000 + 60,000 + 1,250,000 = UGX 1,610,000
c) Adjusted Cost for C with 10% discount on Reams:
Discount = 10% of 1,250,000 = 125,000 ⇒ New Cost = 1,610,000 - 125,000 = UGX 1,485,000
Most cost-effective: Supplier C
d) Non-cost factor: Reliability
Suppliers should deliver on time and with quality goods to avoid disruptions.
ITEM THREE: Exponential Equations
Given: 5^(2x+1) + 5^(x+2) = 30
a) Use laws of indices:
Let y = 5^x → 5^(2x+1) = 5 × y², 5^(x+2) = 25 × y
Equation: 5y² + 25y = 30 ⇒ y² + 5y - 6 = 0
b) Solve quadratic: y = [-5 ± √(25+24)]/2 = [-5 ± 7]/2 ⇒ y = 1 or -6
y = 1 ⇒ 5^x = 1 ⇒ x = 0 (valid).
c) Since x = 0 < 2, the network reaches max before 2 seconds.
Conclusion: Network must be adjusted.
