Introduction

In a global perspective, the development of core values

among students plays a vital role in shaping responsible, and

competent individuals. Core values are the fundamental beliefs

and principles that guide an students’ behavior, decisions, and

interactions with others. These values serve as the moral compass

that helps shape one’s character and influences how a person

conducts themselves in various aspects of life. Having a clear

set of core values is essential because they provide direction,

foster integrity, and promote a harmonious society.

According to Henry (2024) one of the most significant

benefits of core values is that they help individuals develop a

sense of purpose and identity. When people are aware of their

core beliefs, they are more likely to make consistent and morally

sound choices. For example, values such as honesty and

responsibility encourage individuals to act truthfully and

fulfill their commitments, building trust and respect from

others.

In addition, practicing core values cultivates personal

growth and character development. Values such as humility,

compassion, and patience encourage individuals to be empathetic

and understanding, which in turn fosters kindness and social

responsibility.
Meanwhile, the Department of Education (DepEd) in the

Philippines plays a vital role in shaping the minds and character

of the nation’s youth. Beyond imparting knowledge and skills, the

DepEd (2025) emphasizes the importance of instilling core values

that serve as the foundation for responsible and ethical

citizenship. These core values are essential in guiding students

to become not only academically proficient but also morally

upright individuals who contribute positively to society.

Indeed, the core values of the Department of Education serve

as guiding principles that shape students into well-rounded

individuals. By practicing these values, students are empowered

to become responsible citizens, capable of making positive

contributions to their families, communities, and the nation.

Upholding these principles is essential in building a just,

compassionate, and progressive society.

Also, the University of Cagayan Valley, being a prominent

educational institution in the region, aims to produce not only

academically proficient graduates but also individuals who embody

the principles and values promoted by the DepEd. Understanding

the extent to which these students practice these core values

provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of current

educational strategies and the areas that require further

enhancement.
Furthermore, the Department of Education (DepEd) emphasizes

four essential core values that serve as guiding principles for

students, teachers, and every Filipino. These values—Makadiyos,

Makatao, Makabansa, at Makakalikasan—are designed to nurture not

only academically competent individuals but also morally upright

and socially responsible citizens. Together, these four core

values form a comprehensive framework that guides Filipinos to

become well-rounded individuals. Upholding Makadiyos, Makatao,

Makabansa, at Makakalikasan helps build a society grounded in

faith, respect, patriotism, and environmental consciousness. As

the future of the nation, the youth are encouraged to embody

these principles, leading to a more just, compassionate, and

sustainable Philippines.

Finally, the core values of DepEd serve not only as moral

ideals but also as practical guides for daily life. By embracing

Makadiyos, Makatao, Makabansa, at Makakalikasan, Filipinos can

foster a harmonious society rooted in faith, respect, patriotism,

and environmental stewardship.

With this, this study aims to assess the practice of the

Department of Education's core values among Grade 12 students in

the University of Cagayan Valley. It aims to identify the levels

of adherence to these values, factors influencing their practice,

and the implications for educational policies and student

development programs. Moroever, the Department of Education

(DepEd) emphasizes the importance of cultivating core values such

as respect, responsibility, integrity, and excellence to foster

holistic student growth and societal progress. As the future

leaders and decision-makers, Grade 12 students stand at a crucial

juncture where the reinforcement of these values can

significantly influence their academic performance, personal

development, and community engagement.
