1. Introduction to Climate

- Climate refers to the sum total of weather conditions and variations over a large area for a long

period of time (more than 30 years).

- Weather refers to the state of the atmosphere over an area at any point in time.

- India experiences a monsoon type of climate.

- The climate of India is influenced by various factors such as latitude, altitude, and pressure and

wind systems.

2. Factors Affecting Climate

- Latitude: Places near the equator experience high temperatures as they receive direct

sunlight.

- Altitude: Higher altitudes have cooler climates, as the temperature decreases with height.

- Distance from the sea: Coastal areas have moderate climate due to the influence of the sea.

- Pressure and Winds: Winds influence the distribution of heat and moisture over the Earth's

surface.

- Ocean Currents: Warm and cold ocean currents affect coastal climates.

- Relief Features: Mountains act as barriers for winds, affecting the climate of regions.

3. Monsoon and Its Mechanism

- The word 'monsoon' is derived from the Arabic word 'mausim', meaning season.

- The monsoon winds are primarily caused due to the differential heating of land and water.
- In summers, low pressure is developed over the Indian subcontinent, attracting

moisture-laden winds from the Indian Ocean.

- These winds bring heavy rainfall to most parts of India.

- In winters, high pressure is developed over the Indian subcontinent, causing cold dry winds

to blow towards the ocean.

4. Seasons in India

India experiences four main seasons:

1. The Cold Weather Season (Winter): December to February.

2. The Hot Weather Season (Summer): March to May.

3. The Advancing Monsoon (Rainy Season): June to September.

4. The Retreating Monsoon (Autumn): October to November.

Each season has distinct temperature and precipitation patterns that influence the

agricultural and lifestyle practices of the region.

5. Distribution of Rainfall

- India receives most of its annual rainfall during the monsoon season.

- The Western Ghats, Meghalaya, and Assam receive very heavy rainfall.

- Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat receive very little rainfall due to their location in the rain

shadow area.

- The average annual rainfall in India is about 125 cm, but it varies significantly across the

country.

6. Conclusion
India's climate plays a vital role in shaping its economy, agriculture, and cultural practices.

The monsoon is particularly important for agriculture, as it provides the majority of the

country's annual rainfall. The varying climate conditions across different regions of India

also result in diverse flora, fauna, and lifestyles.
