1) If the parabolic sound dish the sideline crew is holding has a 2 ft diameter at the
opening and the microphone is located 6in from the vertex, find the equation
that governs the center cross section of the parabolic sound dish.
Soln. The generating parabola is sketched on the xy -plane with opening to the right
and vertex at the origin (0 , 0) and axis along the x -axis.

along the x-axis.

1) Suppose that two people standing 1 mile apart both see a flash of lightening.
After a period of time, the person standing at point A hears the thunder. One
second later, the person standing at point B hears the thunder. If the person at
B is due west of the person at A and the lightning strike is known to occur
due north of the person standing at point A, where did the lightning strike
occur? (Sound travels at 1100 feet per second) (1 mile = 5280 feet)

of a hyperboloid, a solid obtained by rotating a hyperbola about its conjugate
axis. Suppose that such a cooling tower has a base diameter of 400 feet and

the diameter at the top of the tower is 300 feet, how tall is the tower?

Soln Draw the xy-plane and place the LORAN stations corresponding to the
foci on the x-axis at A(−100, 0) and B(100, 0).

Time difference: t=0.00043 s.


Radio waves travel ≈ v=186,000 mi/s.
Distance difference of paths:

d=vt=186,000 × 0.00043=79.98 ≈ 80 mi .

For a hyperbola, the constant difference equals 2 a, so

simultaneously, but the pulse from station F₁ is received by the ship 100
microseconds sooner than the pulse from station F₂. (Assume that the pulses

5) Two recording devices are set 2400 feet apart, with the device at point A to
the west of the device at point B. At a point between the devices, 300 ft from
point B, a small amount of explosive is detonated. The recording devices
record the time until the sound reaches each. How far directly north of point
B should a second explosion be done so that the measured time difference
recorded by the devices is the same as that for the first detonation?
