Trigonometry Topic: Identities and Proving Identities

Fundamental Identities:
Reciprocal Identities:
!
sin 𝜽 = "#" % and vice versa
𝟏 Proving Identities:
cos 𝜽 = 𝒔𝒆𝒄 𝜽 and vice versa
Three Ways:
!
tan 𝜽 = +,- 𝜽 and vice versa 𝑎=𝑏
1. 𝑎 to 𝑏
• Manipulate left to make it the same as the right
Quotient Identities:
./0 𝜽 +,. 𝜽 side
tan 𝜽 = +,. 𝜽 cot 𝜽 = ./0 𝜽 2. 𝑏 to 𝑎
• Manipulate right to make it the same as the left
Cofunction Identities: side
sin 𝜽 = cos(90° − 𝜽) and vice versa 3. 𝑎 = 𝑏 to 𝑐 = 𝑐
tan 𝜽 = cot(90° − 𝜽) and vice versa • Manipulate both sides of the equation to make
two equal expressions.
sec 𝜽 = csc(90° − 𝜽) and vice versa

Pythagorean Identities:
sin1 𝜃 + cos 1 𝜃 = 1
1 + cot 𝜃 = sec 𝜃
tan1 𝜃 + 1 = csc 1 𝜃

Examples and Exercises:

!
1. sec 𝜃 − tan 𝜃 sin 𝜃 = .2+ %
!3+,. 4
2. ./0 4
= csc 𝐴 + cot 𝐴
.2+ 5 ./0 5
3. -60 53+,- 5
= sin1 𝐵
.2+ % -60 %
4. +,. %
− +,- % = 1
.2+! 7
5. .2+! 78!
= csc 1 𝑌
