CHAPTER III: TRANSPORTATION SERVICES

A. TRANSPORTATION ROLE IN LOGISTICS

Transport role in Logistics/ Supply Chain

Areas in the supply chain effected by transportation

Transportation must interface with many functions

Transport modes and means

Mode of transport
Mode of Transport: describes the way goods are transported
There are basically five different modes: Rail, Road, Air, Water, Pipeline,
Multimodal
Means of transport
It defines as the vehicles that uses for transportation such as vessel, barge, truck,
train, aircraft, etc.
Advantages and Disadvantages
 Air transport
o Pros
 Fast
 Safe
 No physical Barrier
 Global linking
o Cons
 High Cost
 Limited Capacity
 Procedures
 Not flexible
 Weather dependent
o Means
 Passengers aircraft
 Freighter aircraft
 Combi
 Helicopter
 Emergency Logistics
Emergency logistics refers to the logistics activities caused by emergencies,
including emergency logistics demand generated by emergencies and emergency
logistics supply activities to meet these logistics needs, pursuing the purpose of
maximizing time efficiency and minimizing disaster losses. Facility location and
material distribution in emergency logistics is an important part of emergency
decision-making and one of the key links of rescue operation
Rapid responses delivery services: include same day delivery, overnight delivery
and point to point delivery.
 Sea Transport
o Pros
 Low cost
 High Capacity
 Continental Linker
 No physical Barrier
 Ideal for transporting heavy and bulky goods
o Cons
 Longer lead times
 Limited Capacity
 Procedures
 Not flexible
 Weather dependent
 Ocean freight services can suffer from delays

CONSOLIDATION & BREAK-BULK service

 Road transport
o Pros
 Door Service
 Medium Capacity
 Flexible
 Ideal for transporting heavy and bulky goods
o Cons
 High accident rates
 High costs for long haul
 Limited Capacity
 Procedures
 Traffic jam
Disposal Logistics
Disposal logistics include the collection of all types of waste and the subsequent
sorting, packaging, storage and transport. Waste can be any type of waste such as
scrap, surplus, obsolete finished goods, recyclable materials, unwanted co-products
or even loading aids such as pallets and packaging.
Disposal logistics consists of three value recovery stages: redistribution logistics,
reprocessing logistics and reuse logistics. In the first stage, the waste is collected,
sorted and classified for further use. In the second stage, the material (recycling) or
energy recovery (incineration) takes place. In the third stage, the residues are
finally distributed.
 Rail Transport
o Pros
 Land-bridge
 Hinter Linker
 Large capacity
 Affordable costs
 Safe
 Suitable for bulky goods
o Cons
 Longer lead-time
 Infrastructure unit
 Procedures
 Not flexible

Why rail transport and road transport are seperated?

Multimodal Transport
• Using at least 2 different modes of transport (intermediate handling);
• Between at least 2 different countries.
• Organized by 1 carrier (MTO);
• Under 1 contract;
• With 1 freight document;
• Under 1 liability
• And 1 price
Containerization
Containerization is a system of intermodal freight transport using intermodal
containers (also called shipping containers and ISO containers). The containers
have standardized dimensions. They can be loaded and unloaded, stacked,
transported efficiently over long distances, and transferred from one mode of
transport to another—container ships, rail transportflatcars, and semi-trailer trucks
—without being opened.
