Environmental sustainability has become more of a concern in recent years, and

experts have been exploring innovative ways to recycle waste materials. Eggshells are
a common food byproduct that pollutes the environment because they are usually
thrown away as waste. However, because of their high calcium carbonate content, they
are a viable resource for a variety of applications, including the production of chalk. In a
2020 study titled "Eggshell chalk: An eco-friendly alternative to traditional chalk" by
Goussous, J., et al., published in the Journal of Cleaner Production, the potential of
eggshell chalk production was investigated. They found that the produced eggshell
chalk had comparable writing quality and erasability to regular chalk.

The study explores the potential of utilizing eggshells, a common waste product,
as an economical and environmentally beneficial means of producing chalk. Although
chalk is primarily used in classrooms, especially in parts of the Philippines, concerns
about its potential negative health effects—such as respiratory problems and eye
irritation from dust exposure—have led to a demand for safer substitutes. Concerns
about the effects of traditional chalk manufacturing and disposal on the environment are
also becoming more widespread. The study looks at whether it's possible to make chalk
from eggshells, which are high in calcium carbonate, to solve environmental and health
concerns.

The practicality of utilizing eggshells as a key component in the creation of chalk

is examined in the study Eco-Chalk: Transforming Eggshells into a Learning Essential,
which was carried out by researchers from St. Catherine School of Jesus in 2023. The
authors highlight the alternative's advantages for the environment and human health,
pointing out that eggshells are a good source of calcium carbonate, which is necessary
for the formulation of chalk. According to their research, eggshell chalk is a good
alternative to commercial chalk because it is safer for use in classrooms, has a
smoother texture, and produces less dust.

According to Marie R. G. Attard, James Bowen, and Steven J. Portugal (2023),

surface texture heterogeneity in maculated eggshells. The study examined the surface
roughness, skewness, and variance of eggshells from 204 bird species that had
patterned (maculated) eggs and 166 species that had plain (immaculate) eggs. The
findings indicated that in 71% of the species studied, maculated eggs frequently had
rougher headline pigments in comparison to background pigments. As compared to the
background pigments of maculated eggs, animals with flawless eggs showed no
appreciable variations in surface texture when compared to the maculated eggs'
background pigments. Habitat type and food had an impact on the surface roughness
and texture of maculated eggs, whereas immaculate eggs displayed more surface
roughness in species that had larger clutch numbers and were eaten.

In another study from the University of Iloilo – PHINMA, utilizing eggshells, the
researchers focused on developing a well-organized research framework for
environmentally friendly chalk production (PHINMA University of Iloilo, 2023). Their
research emphasizes the value of statistical analysis, especially ANOVA, and
experimental design in assessing the efficacy of eggshell-based chalk. The study found
that eggshell chalk satisfies the fundamental requirements for durability and usability,
bolstering the notion that eco-friendly teaching resources can be created using locally
produced materials.

According to Sasha Anne Marie Trinidad (2019). Chicken eggshells (Gallus

Domesticus) as potential chalk; they used this work to complete their research.
According to Sasha Anne Marie Trinidad (2019), "the effectiveness of using eggshells
as an alternative chalk. "Formulate this hypothesis to find the proportion of successful
outcomes that arise when an eggshell filled with is used. This experimental work
allowed the researchers to focus more on the texture, durability, and stability (in writing)
of using eggshells as an alternative to chalk as the dependent variables of this study
and the respondents' age, gender, and position profile as the independent variables.
After learning about this topic. The research will propose that eggshells be used in place
of chalk.

A quantitative study of trash use, highlighting the increasing amount of eggshell

waste in the Philippines and its possible uses, was added to the literature by the
University of Santo Tomas (University of Santo Tomas, 2023). According to the authors,
eggshells, which are frequently thrown away as kitchen scraps, have a high calcium
carbonate content that makes them appropriate for use in building and educational
materials. Their results lend credence to the idea that recycling eggshells encourages
sustainable innovation in commonplace products while simultaneously lowering
environmental waste.

The potential use of eggshells in the creation of chalk is further supported by a

different study published on Scribd under the title Chicken Eggshells as an Alternative
Chalk by Mendoza (2022). Mendoza describes a straightforward yet efficient process for
turning eggshells into chalk, highlighting its affordability and non-toxicity. This alternative
chalk's potential for usage in classrooms is further supported by the study's observation
that it performs similarly to commercial goods in terms of texture and writing quality.
Marengo's 2019 study highlights the numerous health benefits of eggshells,
including strong muscles, energy production, healthy pregnancies, skin and eye health,
and being a healthy natural source of calcium. Calcium, particularly found in dairy
products, is essential for skin protection. Researchers made use of an organic chalk
made from chicken eggshells, containing calcium carbonate and flour as a thickening
agent. This safe, environmentally friendly chalk is suitable for various uses, including
writing, arts, and crafts, promoting creativity and resourcefulness.

The amount of eggshell waste is increasing as egg consumption increases;

consequently, discovering ways to recycle these waste materials would be
advantageous. The expected amount of eggshell waste in the Philippines in 2019 is
63.28 thousand metric tons. Furthermore, eggshells indicate potential for many
applications due to their polycrystalline structure and calcite crystal concentration
(Estrada, Santiago, & Zialcita, 2023).

Lastly, research by De Guzman (2022) explores the broader effects of

sustainable product creation and waste management in the Philippines. De Guzman
promotes turning everyday home waste—such as flour and eggshells—into practical
products like chalk. The study supports the ideas of community-based innovation and
environmental stewardship, inspiring young scientists to use scientific investigatory
projects to investigate workable answers to ecological problems.
