Abstract:
This assignment explores the wetlands of Jhinaidah and Jaipurhat districts in northwestern
Bangladesh, focusing on their geographic characteristics, economic significance, and
ecological roles. The wetlands, including baors, beels, and riverine systems, provide
essential services such as flood control, irrigation, biodiversity support, and
socioeconomic sustenance for local communities. The wetlands are home to a rich variety of
aquatic species and are crucial for local agriculture, particularly in sustaining crop production
during dry periods and supporting fisheries that contribute to the livelihoods of rural
populations. Key wetlands such as Kotchandpur Baor, Baro Baor, Nabaganga River, and
Kumari Beel are examined for their ecological functions, economic impacts, and challenges
in sustainable management. Despite their importance, these wetlands face significant threats
from pollution, encroachment, unsustainable fishing practices, and the effects of climate
change, which jeopardize their long-term sustainability. The assignment emphasizes the need
for integrated wetland management that balances conservation with community
development. By analyzing the current status and challenges of these ecosystems, the study
advocates for policy interventions, community involvement, and sustainable practices to
protect these critical wetlands, ensuring they continue to provide essential services for the
people and biodiversity of the region.
