Integers
Simplifying Integers
When the signs are the same write down the sign and ADD.
Examples
1. -2 – 4 = -6 2. +4 + 5 = +9 3. -21 – 5 = -26
When the signs are different, write down the sign of the “bigger” number and SUBTRACT.
Examples
1. -2 + 3 = +1 2. -4 + 2 = -2 3. -12 + 11 = -1
3 is ‘bigger’ write 4 is ‘bigger’ write 12 is ‘bigger’ write
down the + and down the – and down the – and then
then 3 – 2 = 1 then 4 – 2 =2 12 – 11 = 1
Multiplication and Division
+.+ = + +÷+=+ Remember
-.- = + -÷ - = + 2(3) = (2)(3) = 2.3 = (2)3 = 2 x 3 = 6
+.- = - +÷-=- are different ways of multiplying.
-.+ = - -÷ + = -
Exercise: SIMPLIFY WITHOUT USING A CALCULATOR
e.g. -3 – 5 = -8 e.g. -3 + 5 = +2 e.g. 3 – (-1) = 3 + 1 = 4
-4 + 1 = -3 e.g. -3 +(-2) = -3 – 2 = -5
1. −2−9=¿ 4 – 7 = -3
e.g. -2 –(-5) = -2 + 5 = 3
2. −4−9=¿
3. −10−10=¿
4. −6−2=¿ 1. -3 + 2 =
