CHAPTER-4
HARDWARE

4.0 COMPUTER CABINET

15
I opened a computer cabinet and dissambled the different components found in it.
The different components that identified were:

 Motherboard
 Processor
 RAM
 Hard drive
 Power supply

First of all, it is highly advisable to take the right precautions before opening the computer
cabinet. If you are not sure how to do this, ask someone to help you.

Inside the cabinet, one can expect to see some machinery and a decent number of wires and
plugs of various sizes crisscrossing all over.

If one open cabinet after a really long time, the first thing one might expect to lay their eyes on
is a lot of dirt and cobwebs (probably).

Computer towers tend to attract dust particles due to the presence of fans. If they are not cleaned
for a long time, their interior will become quite dusty.

Of course, it is a good idea to clean your computer tower regularly. Even if one is not sure how
to open the cabinet, it is always better to ask more experienced people who can help one safely
explore and clean the interior of computer tower.

A computer tower consists of five major components:

[Link]: -
A board that takes up most of the visible space inside the cabinet.
It is also called a mainboard, mobo, MB, system board, etc., and forms the basis of every
computer.
The motherboard supplies power to the processor, RAM, hard disk, and other hardware
components. It houses every wire and connector you can see inside the case. It also houses the
famous RAM (Random Access Memory), also known as primary memory. The motherboard
also houses other important components such as a graphics card, LAN card, etc.
It’s known as the “Parent Body”; It takes care of everything.
A particular processor is only compatible with certain motherboards, and vice versa.
[Link]: -
Also referred to as the CPU – Central Processing Unit, this is the most important part of the
cabinet.
We are not be able to see it at first glance when we open the cabinet; as normally, a fan and a
heatsink are attached to the processor to ensure that it does not overheat.
Intel and AMD are two leading processor manufacturers, which bring new variants of existing
processors to the market every few months.
[Link]: -
RAM, stands for Random Access Memory, and is used as a short-term memory for computers
to place its data for easy access.

16
RAM is the ultimate solution for improving PC performance, it’s not the only solution for
better performance.
The more RAM a computer has, the more data it can usually juggle at any given moment.
Motherboard can only hold a certain amount of RAM.
[Link] DRIVE: -
It is usually built into a slot above the motherboard. It typically measures between 2.5 “and
3.5” and weighs a few pounds.
All the information is stored permanently and can be accessed, modified, or deleted if needed.
A virus attack can negatively affect a hard drive.
[Link] SUPPLY: -
It is also known as the SMPS – Switched Mode Power Supply, or PSU – Power Supply Unit.
The part of the enclosure that supplies power to every single component within the enclosure.
It converts an alternating current of 220-230 V into a direct current that the computer can use.
It is located in the lower corner of the enclosure and is equipped with a small fan to prevent
overheating.

4.1 LAPTOP

I opened a laptop and dissambled the different components found in it.

The different components that identified were:

 Battery
 Motherboard

17
 Cooling fan
 Pocessor
 HDD/SSD
 RAM
 WLAN
 Speakers

1. BATTERY: -

A laptop battery is a rechargable device that supplies power to a laptop computer. It allows
the laptop to operate without being connected to a power outlet. It is usually located on the
underside of the laptop and can be easily removed for replacement or maintenance
purposes.
There are several types of laptop batteries, including NIKEL-CADMIUM, NICKEL-
METAL HYDRIDE, AND LITHIUM-ION.
Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, with lithium-ion batteries being the
most common and widely used due to their higher energy density, longer lifespan, and
lower weight.
The lifespan of a laptop battery depends on several factors, including its type, age, and usage
patterns.
On average, a laptop battery can last between 2-5 years or between 300-500 charge cycles.
To maximize the lifespan of one’s laptop battery, one can follow some best practices, such
as adjusting power management settings, reducing screen brightness, disabling unused
ports and peripherals, and avoiding extreme temperatures.
One can also perform regular maintenance, such as calibrating battery, updating laptop’s
BIOS, and keeping laptop clean and free of dust and debris.

2. MOTHERBOARD: -

A motherboard is the main PCB in a laptop that connects and controls all the hardware
components of a laptop, including the processor, memory, storage devices, and I/O devices.
The motherboard is a laptop’s central communication backbone connectivity point, through
which all components and external peripherals connect and allows them to function as a
unified system.
The motherboard is responsible for managing power distribution, regulating temperature,
and facilitating data transfer between components.
Motherboard is a critical component that plays a significant role in the performance and
maintenance of a laptop.
The key components of a laptop motherboard and their functions:

o CPU socket – Where the processor is installed. It is the brain of the computer and
performs all the processing tasks.
o Northbridge and Southbridge – Chipsets that manages the communication between
the CPU, RAM, and other hardware components.
The Northbridge is resposible for high-speed transmission, such as between the
CPU and RAM.
The Southbridge handles lower-speed functions, such as USB, SATA, and PCI
Express.

18
o RAM slots – Where the memory modules are insertes.
o BIOS Chip – Contains the firmware that manages the computer’s boot process and
initializes the hardware components during startup.
o CMOS battery – Small battery that powers the BIOS chip and maintains the system
clock even when the computer is turned off.
o Expansion slots – Where additional hardware components, such as a Graphic Card,
Sound Card, or Network Card can be installed.
o Power connectors – Provide power to the motherboard and other hardware
components.
o Chipset – Collection of chips that provide the interface between the various
hardware components and motherboard.
o i/o connectors – The ports on the motherboard that allows external devices to be
connected, such as USB port, Ethernet Ports, and Audio Jacks.
o Battery Connectors – Where the laptop battery connects the motherboard.
3. COOLING FAN: -
The cooling fan works by spinning its blades, which creates airflow inside the computer
case. The fan draws in cool air from the surroundings and pushes it over the heat-
generating components like the CPU and GPU. As the air passes through these
components, it absorbs heat and carries it away. The hot air is then expelled from the
computer case, maintaining a cooler temperature for the internal components.
As a general guideline, it's recommended to clean your computer fan every 3-6 months.
4. PROCESSOR: -
A processor is made up of hardware that works together to deliver information,
allowing your computer to complete the tasks that you request when you open an
application or make changes to a file.
Processor cores and clock speeds determine how much information can be received
at a time, and how quickly that information can be processed on your computer.
The speed at which your computer’s cores and clock speed work together is
considered its processing speed.
5. HDD/SSD: -
HDD and SSD are the types of storage devices commonly used in laptops.
SSDs are the most common storage drives today.
SSDs are smaller and faster than HDDs.
SSDs are noiseless and allow PCs to be thinner and more lightweight.
HDDs are more common in older devices.
If one primarily uses PC for web browsing and light work, one may not need as much
storage space.
If one work with large videos or files, one may want more storage.
If one use OneDrive or another cloud storage service for photos and files, one may
need less storage on device.

6. RAM: -
RAM is one of the most important part of laptop.
It provides high-speed, short-term memory to CPU.
The amount of memory depends on what one uses for; 12GB of RAM is a good general
minimum standard.
RAM typically comes in the form of a rectangular flat circuit board with memory chips
attached, also referred to as a memory module.
19
Computers typically come with at least two RAM modules with room to add more, if
needed.
Speed of RAM determines how quickly data flows in and out of CPU.
7. WLAN: -
A wireless local-area network (WLAN) is a group of collocated computers or other
devices that form a network based on radio transmissions rather than wired connections.
A Wi-Fi network is a type of WLAN; anyone connected to Wi-Fi while reading this
webpage is using a WLAN.
8. SPEAKERS: -
Laptop speakers are built-in audio devices that come with [Link]’re responsible for
the sound one hear when one play music, watch movies, or do anything else that
involves audio on ones laptop.
