Semester 1, 2025/26 MA2001 Linear Algebra I Tutorial 7
Questions in this tutorial sheet will be discussed in the tutorial classes in Week 9
(13/10-17/10).
You are advised to revise Section 3.7 and Chapter 4 before attempting the questions.

(Learning objectives: Understand the definitions of the various fundamental
subspaces associated with a matrix. Understand the Dimension Theorem for Ma-
trices.)
3. Let V = {a(1, 2, 0, 0) + b(0, −1, 1, 0) + c(0, 0, 0, 1) | a, b, c ∈ R}.

(b) Find a 4 × 4 matrix B such that the column space of B is V .
(c) Find a 4 × 4 matrix C such that the nullspace of C is V .
(Learning objectives: While it is straightforward to investigate the fundamental
subspaces given a matrix, you should also be able to construct matrices with
specific properties if given a subspace.)

4. Let A = 1 x 1 . Determine all possible values of x for A to have rank 1,2
x 1 1
and 3 respectively.

and its equivalent statements.)
5. Let A be a square matrix.
(a) Show that the nullspace of A is a subset of the nullspace of A2 .
(b) If rank(A2 ) = rank(A), show that the nullspace of A2 is equal to the nullspace
