Moisture Content Calculations for Wood

The document outlines exercises related to the moisture content of wood, requiring calculations based on given weights and moisture levels for different wood species. It includes problems for determining weight changes due to moisture absorption and drying, as well as tables for recording moisture content at various stages. The document emphasizes the importance of showing complete solutions and rounding answers to two decimal places.

MOISTURE CONTENT OF WOOD (PART I)

A. Solve the following problems and show the complete solutions. Encircle the final answers.

1. A wood sample from narra (Pterocarpus indicus) has an ovendry weight of 230 grams.
How much would it weigh if it absorbs moisture and increases its moisture content to
60%?
Answer: __________________

2. A piece of guijo (Shorea guiso) wood weighs 300 grams at 75% MC. What will be its
weight when dried to 0% MC?
Answer: _________________

B. A specimen from a fresh piece of timber, with an initial weight of 106.43 grams, was dried in
an oven. As it losses moisture its weight was measured at a regular interval until a constant
weight was attained. Given in the table below are the weight measurements at the different
stages of drying. Compute the moisture content of the wood at each stage or time the
weight was taken. Fill up the third column of the table with your answers. Express/round-
off your answers to the second decimal place. Show your complete solutions on a separate
page.

C. A specimen from a fresh piece of timber, with an initial weight of 235.54 grams, was dried in
an oven. As drying took place, it progressively lost moisture and decreased in weight Given
the table below, determine the possible weight of the wood at the different moisture
content levels indicated by column 2. (Fill up the third column of the table with your
answers. Express/round-off your answers to the second decimal place. Show your
