Discuss International Organization for Standardization (ISO) under the
following sub- headings;
1. Procedure for standard development
I)Identify- Identification of a need is required. This is done by providers and
patients. Once a need is discovered, a project proposal to create a new standard is
put up.
II) Committee- Standards are created by experts in their relevant fields. They
include researchers, providers, patients and families, who form into a technological
committee.
III)Study- The technological committee conducts preliminary research and creates a
draft outline of the new standard.
IV)Consensus- Once a draft is written, the technological committee meet to approve
a draft for public review. This consensus is required in order for progress.
V)Public Review- Next is to present the new standard for public review. Feedback is
provided to improve the quality of the standard and ensure standards cover all
relevant areas.
VI) Approve- After public review, the standard goes back to the technological
committee to make corrections that are necessary based on the feedback . The
committee then votes on the final draft.
VII)Publish- After the new or standard receives approval from the technological
committee, it is released. Health providers and systems may purchase it and add to
their practice.
2. Benefits of ISO standards
I) Improve sales and profits- Quality products increase profits and customer brand
trust
II) More investors-if the products bring high profits and the customer brand trust it
attracts investors.
III) Better production efficiency- ISO encourages good practice making business
more efficient in production of better quality .
IV) Minimise product downtime- following international standards means low
downtime as production facilities are up to date.
V) Broaden the market coverage- One can expand the company geographically as
the product become internationally accepted.

Discuss the Kenya Bureau of Standards under the following subheadings;
1. History of KEBS
-The Kenya Bureau of Standard is a government agency responsible for governing and
maintaining the standards and practices of metrology in Kenya.
- It was established by an Act of Parliament of Kenya's National Assembly of the Laws of
Kenya. The Bureau started its operations in July 1974.
2. Objectives of KEBS

II) Measurements, materials, processes
III)Promotion at national, regional and international level
IV)Certification of industrial products
V)Assistance in the production of quality goods
VI)Quality inspection of imports at ports of entry
VII) Improvement of measurement accuracies
VII) Dissemination of information relating to standards.
3. Divisions of KEBS and their roles
I) Standards Development Division
II) Quality Assurance Division
III)Testing Services Division
IV)Metrology Services Division
V) Finance and Administration Division
VI)Import and Export Division.
4. Procedure for standard development
I) Application process and require
A. fully filled in standardization mark application

III) Evaluation
A. If the samples comply and inspector’s report indicate compliance with the codes
of practice, a recommendation is made for issuance of permit to use standardization
mark to the Permit Standardization committee.
B .If permit standardization committee confirms that all requirements have been
met, a permit is then issued.
C .If nonconformities are identified at the point of Inspection, the Manufacturer has
the responsibility to undertake corrective action and inform KEBS to confirm the
actions taken.

A. Fiber Content test- The test is required to know the content of the fabric.
B. Fabric Weight Test- It’s required to figure out the weight of fabric.
C. Yarn Count -Used to determine the fineness and coarseness of yarn.
D .Threads per unit length -Used to identify the knitting method.
E. Defects -Mostly used 4-point system to identify visual defects of fabric, it’s fabric
inspection.
F. Color Fastness Test -done to measure the level of fading or bleeding that occurs
on garments with factors like washing, ironing, lights and rubbing.
G. Dimensional Stability –DIMENSIONAL STABILITY to Washing (shrinkage) needs for
checking measurements of garment after washing.
H. Recovery Test (It refers the power of fabric to come its original form or shape
after stretched)
I. PH Value -pH is the measure of the acidity or basicity of a solution. The pH scale
measures how acidic or basic a substance is.
J. Repellency -To observe the level of water repellency of water proof finished
goods.
