According to the mouth parts of insect, insect consist of Basic set of five mouth parts that is
used in different purpose such as chewing, eating and grasping. These parts are known as
Labrum, Mandible, maxillae , Labium and hypopharynx.
Mouth parts of insect has two types based on different groups of insect depending on there
feeding habits such as Mandibulate ( feeding on solid food) and Haustellate ( feeding on
liquid food)
Labrum: Labrum is cover loosely mouth part of insect refers to upper lip, its help insect to guide
food in to the mouth.
Mandible: mandible are hard powerful cutting jaws , that is used in cutting the pray in to
pieces, which helpful in digestion. Mandible located in front of head and its also used for
defence.
Maxillae: maxillae are pincers like structure that are less powerful than mandible and
found behind mandible. They are also used in crushing food particles into pieces.
Labium: Labium is lower cover of insect also known as lower lip. It's also involved in
holding and manipulating food during feeding. It is covering of Mouth part in insect.
Hypopharynx: Hypopharynx is present in interior of Mouth as tongue like structure in
floor of Mouth. Its secrete saliva that make food particles digestible and softened the food
particles.
These are the different mouth parts of insect that are involved in different purpose that are
helpful in daily routine of insect life and very helpful in performing different function such as
feeding, chewing and many others these different type of mouth part used for biting plant
tissues and also plant leaves piercing mouth parts involved in piercing of animal skin to get
nutrients , chewing type of mouth part is used for chewed the Skelton of other small insect
and all other type of hard food particles and sucking type of mouth part is used for sucking
the plant nectar mosquito is good example of sucking type that they suck the blood of human
by there sucking apparatus . The mouth parts of insect are vary extremely in their structure
common mouth parts are involved in biting and chewing but they have been transferred into
sucking apparatus . Different categories of insect has different type of mouth part that are
involved in different function or activities such as Cockroach and Grasshopper has chewing
type of mouth parts, Hemipterous and plant bug has piercing and sucking type of mouth
parts, Mosquito and Dipterous has also piercing and sucking type of mouth parts, honeybee
has chewing and lapping type, Thrips has rasping and sucking type. All these different type
of mouth parts in different categories of insect involved in feeding habits.
